Ayo to stay as Green Archers coach

- – Olmin Leyba

Coach Aldin Ayo will apparently stay on as La Salle picks up the pieces from its failed title-retention bid in the recent UAAP Season 80 men’s basketball tourney.

In a statement circulated on social media, DLSU men’s basketball team management, coaches, players, and staff said they “stand united as a team to regroup and regain the crown next season.”

“Management is firmly behind coach Aldin Ayo and his staff as we start the process of rebuilding for the future,” team management said amid raging talks about Ayo’s status.

Ayo has been the topic of transfer talks even while the just-concluded season was ongoing, with the University of Santo Tomas – a school run by his Dominican friends from back in Letran – reportedly keen on luring him out of the Archers’ camp.

The mentor from Bicol kept mum on the matter as the Archers engaged archrival Ateneo in a fierce duel for the coveted crown, which they eventually lost in three hard-fought games.

“Now more than ever, we are strongly committed to bounce back with a resolve that is uncompromising and unflinching,” team management declared.

The Taft-based squad said it will re-assemble and begin practices on Jan. 16 in the run-up to its stint in the PCCL National Collegiate Championship set Feb. 2-11, where it may have a chance to get back at the Eagles.
