MPD exec hit over abuse
Several Manila Police District police officers are complaining about the maltreatment they allegedly received from the MPD’s second highest official on Sunday.
Closed-circuit television footage from the MPD’s tactical operations center showed Superintendent Christopher Tambongan, deputy district director for administration, accosting two policemen – identified only as Police Officers 1 Delos Reyes and Bago – and ordering them to perform squats in front of other policemen and members of media before noon on Sunday.
Tambongan scolded the two policemen, who were guarding the gate of the MPD compound, for reportedly failing to hang their rifles’ straps on their shoulders.
An official told The STAR Tambongan “has a penchant for humiliating policemen.”
Tambongan also reportedly ordered a certain Police Officer 1 Duenas to lick his belt buckle as his colleagues looked on, the source said.
A few months ago, Tambongan reportedly ordered two policemen to roll on the ground while in uniform, the source said.
“The policemen are demoralized. He had been the subject of several complaints before but he doesn’t seem to mind it,” said the source.
Another high-ranking official said Tambongan was charged with abuse of authority before the Office of the Ombudsman because of his treatment of a subordinate while he was assigned in Region 6.
MPD director Chief Superintendent Joel Napoleon Coronel and Tambongan were not available for comment.
