Brief introducti­on to Xi’s new book

Xi Jinping: The Governance of China (Volume II) was recently published in both Chinese and English. The new volume was compiled by the Party Literature Research Office of the CPC Central Committee and China Internatio­nal Publishing Group, with the support of the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee (the State Council Informatio­n Office).

The second volume of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China, with a total of 569 pages in the original Chinese version, contains a compilatio­n of 99 of Xi’s spoken and written works from Aug. 18, 2014 to Sept. 29, 2017, along with 29 related photos. It is divided into 17 sections by topic with the articles in each section arranged in chronologi­cal order. To add context, notes have been added at the end of each article. 99

ARTICLES

The article titled Make Solid Efforts to Advance Reform is the earliest work included in the second volume, which outlines the main points of Xi’s speech at the fourth meeting of the Leading Group for Further Reform under the CPC Central Committee held on Aug. 18, 2014. The latest one outlines the main points of Xi’s speech at the 43rd group study session of the Political Bureau of the 18th CPC Central Committee held on Sept. 29, 2017, titled Develop and Popularize Marxism in the Modern Chinese Context.

The book’s 17 sections cover a wide range of topics such as socialism with Chinese characteri­stics and the Chinese Dream, a moderately prosperous society in all aspects, deeper reform, rule of law, governing the party with strict discipline, new developmen­t concepts, the new normal of economic developmen­t, socialist democracy, cultural confidence, the well-being of the people, beautiful China, military developmen­t, “one country, two systems,” China’s diplomacy as a major country, peaceful developmen­t and cooperatio­n with other countries, the Belt and Road Initiative and a community of shared future.

The fifth section, themed on governing the party with strict discipline, has 12 articles in total, the most of all 17 sections. Articles in this section included Be a Good Country Party Secretary (a speech made on Jan. 12, 2015), Observe Discipline and Rule (a speech made on Jan. 13, 2015), Keep in Line with the CPC Party Central Committee (a speech made on Dec. 11, 2015), Meet the Standards for Party Members (points raised on Aug. 13, 2017) and others.

The 29 photos included in the book are divided into three groups. The first group is a photo of Xi waving to people, with his signature below.

The second group contains photos of important moments, including Xi with villagers of Liangjiahe in Yanchuan County, while reviewing poverty alleviatio­n efforts in old revolution­ary base areas in Shaanxi Province on Feb. 13, 2015; Xi planting a tree in Sunhe Township, Beijing, on April 3, 2015; Xi inspecting troops attending the military parade marking the 70th anniversar­y of the victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and World War II, held at Tiananmen Square in Beijing on Sept. 3, 2015; Xi’s handshake with Taiwanese leader Ma Ying-jeou during their meeting in Singapore on Nov. 7, 2015; Xi casting his ballot in the election for new deputies to the local people’s congress in his district in Beijing on Nov. 15, 2016; and Xi reviewing progress on the constructi­on of the third runway at Hong Kong Internatio­nal Airport on July 1, 2017.

The third group contains more photos of important moments, like Xi together with leaders and representa­tives of other member states on their way to planting the Asia-Pacific Forest of Partners during the 22nd APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Beijing on Nov. 11, 2014; Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan in a symbolic stroll with other Asian and African leaders to commemorat­e the historic 1955 Bandung Conference in Bandung, Indonesia, on April 24, 2015; Xi delivering a speech at the general debate of the 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly at the UN headquarte­rs in New York City on Sept. 28, 2015; Xi unveiling the sculpted logo of the Asian Infrastruc­ture Investment Bank at its opening ceremony in Beijing on Jan. 16, 2016; Xi and other world leaders arriving at the conference hall of the 11th G20 Summit held in Hangzhou on Sept. 4, 2016; and Xi chairing and addressing the Ninth BRICS Summit in Xiamen on Sept. 4, 2017.
