lectures by Benilde’s Mukhi slated
Auda-City to Perform, a reflection on shows which literally took to the streets, is set on Feb. 28, 3 p.m. at the SDA Cinema of the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB).
The seminar is inspired by a paper presented by Benilde Arts and Culture Cluster (BACC) Associate Dean Dr. Sunita Mukhi at the Performance Studies International Conference in Hamburg, Germany recently.
The lecture touches on Mukhi’s experi
ences in Love Gone Wrong, Love Redeemed: The Dante Project, Mga Misteryo ng Liwanag: Christ’s Luminous Mysteries, and Exploring Escolta, wherein the college’s studentartists claimed spaces that are not often used for dramatic purposes for their creative expression.
In her abstract, she explained: “These productions were massive, involving over 400 participants. They were long and demanding of both performers and audiences. Two out of three productions or ‘pilgrimages’ were based on Christian literary texts, while ‘Exploring Escolta’ was bound by another albeit profane covenant, which included a memo of understanding with the Escolta Commercial Association Inc., comprised of building owners who wanted to revitalize the Queen of Streets as a lucrative cultural hub.”
Mukhi is a cultural producer, performance artist and an interdisciplinary performance scholar. Her book Doing the Desi Thing:
Performing Indianness in New York City is based on her doctoral dissertation in Performance Studies from New York University.
The general public is most welcome to attend.
