Mayon simmering down –NDRRMC

- By MICHAEL PUNONGBAYAN

Mayon Volcano still shows signs of restlessness, but the likelihood of a major eruption is decreasing.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), in its latest report yesterday, said the sixkilometer danger zone and seven-kilometer extended danger zone will, however, remain in effect.

From Thursday to Friday, Mayon’s activity was described as showing “general quiescence (quietness), degassing from the summit crater and gravity-driven lava flow.”

The NDRRMC added that there is weak emission of white steam-laden plumes drifting southwest and lava flows could be observed at night moving downslope to the Miisi, Bonga and Basud gullies within 3.3, 4.5, and 1.9 kilometers of the crater, respectively.

Monitoring recorded only one volcanic earthquake and 24 rock fall events during the past hours as Alert Level 3 remains in effect.

“This means that although Mayon’s unrest continues, there is a decreased likelihood of hazardous explosive eruption to occur,” the NDRRMC said.

Despite Mayon’s decreasing volcanic activity, residents are warned of sudden explosions, lava collapses, pyroclastic density currents and ash fall.
