Aussie gets rock star treatment
DAVAO CITY – Of the five world champions who are here to compete Sunday, one stood out during yesterday’s final press conference at the Azuela Cove.
Craig Alexander of Australia, the threetime Ironman world champion and two-time Ironman 70.3 world champion, was treated like a rock star.
“It’s nice that triathletes in the Philippines recognize what I’ve done,” said the 44-yearold, who had graced the cover of many international triathlon magazines.
A Filipino couple lined up to have a moment with Alexander, carrying with them magazines for the world champion to sign.
Another couple had the 5-foot-11 triathlete carry their infant before their picture together was taken.
“That’s why it’s always nice to be back here,” said Alexander heading to Sunday’s race that covers a 1.9 km swim leg, a 90 km bike leg and a 21 km run, totalling 70.3 in distance when converted to miles.
