The good old days never die
It was the late ‘60s when some young high school kids from both San Carlos Boys High and the Jesuit-run School Sacred Heart for Boys wanted to make the best of their years before they faced life’s uncertain future.
One such student, Boy Franco, took the initiative to organize an association of selected friends from these two institutions; they called themselves “The Lords.”
The core group consisted of Herbert Cang, Bebe Chiu, Jess Cuenco, Jack Darza, Rene Fuentes, Gandi Gandionco, Manolet Garcia, Willie Gonzales, Bobby Lee, Boy Mercado, Dennis Mendoza, Mari Osmeña, Jeffren Pages, Isyot Pilapil, Choy Ramos, Tinoy Reyes, Mosing Selma, Nick Torres, Loloy Unchuan, Charles Ybañez and Gil Zamora. The Lords were driven and fun-loving individuals, and their company guaranteed much laughter and enjoyment, not to mention that their parties were the best: wholesome nights out perhaps in their respective parents’ homes.
To add some allure and glam, they chose five of Cebu’s loveliest and named them the Lord’s Five Prettiest. They were Joyce Garcia Dizon, Melinda Garcia, Sharon Pelaez Mendezona, Chanda Romero and Baby Espina Walmsley.
They soon attended college, went on their own paths, but made it a point to get together informally once in a while.
Recently, the same group had a grand reunion at the grand ballroom of the Casino Español de Cebu to relive and enhance the camaraderie and warmth of friendship.
The celebration was filled with moments in time that went back 50 years ago, a heartwarming occasion to reminisce the good days and how much everyone missed those periods, the latenight parties, and the friendships that endured through the years.
Nostalgia was evident as guests took some minutes of silence to say a prayer for five of their once-upon-a-time members who passed on, Piper Hernaez, Ayong Mendoza, Junior Patalinghug, Angkong Pilapil and Tony Teves.
