OFW falls to death in Saudi

- – Janvic Mateo

Another overseas Filipino worker (OFW) has died in Saudi Arabia after falling from the house of her employer in Saudi Arabia on Friday, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).

Citing a report from Philippine consul general in Jeddah Edgar Badajos, the DFA said the Filipino died from head injuries after falling from the sixth-floor flat of her employer in Madinah.

Badajos said a team from the consulate was immediately dispatched to coordinate with authorities investigating the death of the domestic helper, whose name was withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The incident happened amid government’s efforts to ensure the welfare of OFWs, particularly those working in the Middle East.

Earlier this month, domestic helper Agnes Mancilla was hospitalized in Jizan in southwestern Saudi Arabia after she was allegedly forced by her employer to drink household bleach.

Last week, embassy officials in Kuwait conducted an operation to rescue an OFW after it was reported that she was being abused by her employer.

The incident soured the country’s relations with the Kuwaiti government, which accused Philippine embassy officials of violating its sovereignty.

Despite an apology from the Philippines. Kuwait expelled Ambassador Renato Villa, recalled its own ambassador and issued arrest warrants against Filipinos involved in the rescue operation.
