“It’s peace, love, and freedom. The sky, the mountains, and the sea give one a peaceful feeling,” shares Vicky Zubiri about her work in her upcoming solo exhibit from June 15 to 20 at the Gallery of The Peninsula Manila. A percentage of sales from the exhibit, in partnership with Philippine Tatler, will benefit the Child Protection Network.

Through her art, Zubiri hopes to bring respite for the weary souls no matter how brief.

“Painting is a form of release for me,” she explains, alluding to her chronic pain due to six damaged nerves from a harrowing back-toback brain surgeries about 15 years ago. “It’s a form of escape. That’s why I always love to paint birds flying away!” she shares with a laugh.

Her childhood was always rooted in the arts. Her mother was a coloratura soprano and her grandfather was the national composer Francisco Santiago, and they lived in a home full of artworks.

“As a little girl, I grew up with art and classical music. My mother would bring me to Amorsolo’s house when he painted her beautiful portrait. She also had a beautiful art collection — Manansala, Ocampo, Anita Magsaysay Ho, Joya and Alcuaz.”

She would start sketching as child when she got bored in school. She always dabbled in painting and drawing, even having a successful decade-long career in fashion design in the ’90s. It was really much later on that painting took a more important place in her life.

Her first solo exhibit was in 2010 followed by a second in 2012. Both exhibits were in watercolor and generously supported charities that were close to her heart.

“For my third exhibit, flowers, birds, and seascapes are my inspirations as always,” she exclaims. “This may be my last exhibit as it’s getting more and more difficult to see with my left eye. But I suppose in life, the harder you think it is for you, the more you need to succeed in achieving it.”
