MAKEUP MELTING? HOW TO SUMMER-PROOF YOUR BEAUTY

- culture vulture THERESE JAMORA-GARCEAU

Summer is a tricky time for beautistas because, while we all want to look our best, it’s too hot to wear a face full of makeup. You won’t suffer from “makeup melt” at Beauty Bar, which launched its “Summer Cult Favorites” — products designed to withstand sweat, heat and humidity and leave us looking fresh and fabulous.

These five brands have also garnered cult followings thanks to the excellence of their products, and you won’t need to brave traffic to score them either as you can shop at beautybar.com.ph and have your summer beauty stash delivered directly to your door. FULL BROW: ‘KILAY IS LIFE’

For those who bow down to the brow (and isn’t that all of us?), Full Brow from Australia has everything you need to stay on fleek.

“Full Brow is a very young indie brand from Melbourne,” says Reena Rosario, Stores Specialists Inc.’s merchandising group manager. “It has beautiful, bold packaging with equally amazing, high-quality brow products. We know how ‘kilay is life’ to many of the Beauty Bar customers and offering a brand dedicated to brows makes them happier. The brow wax doesn’t just keep the brow hair in place; it also has castor oil for treatment!”

Full Brow owner Marie Noelle Dragutin was also at the launch to introduce her brand. “The brand personality is fun, easy, accessible, and not too serious,” she says. “It’s kind of mix-andmatch how you want to use your brow products.”

The bestselling brow powder is super-creamy, volumizing, and longwearing. New brow crayons have just been introduced: “Everybody loves our powder, so it’s a pencil version of the powder,” Dragutin says. “It’s a grab-and-go in the car on the way to work.”

But her favorite product is the eye cream: “It’s very light and fluffy, not greasy, with luminosity and rosemary extract so it’s anti-inflammatory. Apply it on your brow bone and under eyes as a treatment in the morning before your makeup.” She advises keeping it in your purse because it has a cooling sensation perfect for summer. “You can put it on top of makeup after a long day and it cools and refreshes.” DR. PAWPAW: THE BALM THAT’S THE BOMB

This balm gets its cute name from pawpaw, the fruit of the plant Carica papaya. “Pawpaw is believed to have natural healing properties,” Rosario says. “Dr. Pawpaw is an amazing multi-purpose balm, great for almost anything: dry lips, rough spots, minor cuts, insect bites, split ends and even as a makeup base. It’s a product one should always have within reach, especially when traveling.”

The original balm, which counts Emma Watson, Chloe Moretz and Countess Sophie of Wessex among its fans, also comes in tints like Ultimate Red and Peach Pink to add healthy color to lips, cheeks and eyelids. Dr. Pawpaw also treats hair: the It Does It All 7-in-1 Hair Treatment Styler is a multi-purpose cream that softens, smoothens, detangles, reduces frizz and split ends and provides heat protection. NOT YOUR MOTHER’S HAIR CARE

Not Your Mother’s is a cult brand from the US that aims to create salon-quality hair products with reasonable price points.

“It’s a wonderful haircare line for all types of hair and hair situations,” Rosario says. “There is something for everyone, no matter the hair type. Kinky Moves helps tame wild curls, Love for Hue is for people with colored hair while Plump for Joy helps with volumizing fine, limp hair.” With Not Your Mother’s, every day is bound to be a goodhair day. “Beauty Bar customers especially love the Clean Freak Dry Shampoo — it absorbs excess oils and leaves a light matte finish,” she continues. “The Beach Babe Sea Salt Texturizing Spray is another crowd favorite — just spray on damp hair, scrunch and air-dry for gorgeous beach waves! Not to mention, they all leave hair smelling great!” CARGO: IN THE SWIM

Cargo Cosmetics is a favorite on Hollywood film and TV sets thanks to its wide range of high-definition foundations. Launched at Beauty Bar three years ago, the award-winning Swimmables lines

remain very popular, according to Rosario. “They are water-resistant and long-wearing, perfect for keeping makeup in place, especially in tropical weather.”

The star of this season’s collection is the Havana Nights eyeshadow palette, which contains a versatile mix of neutral and pop shades. Like all of Cargo’s limited-edition 12-shadow palettes, Havana Nights is conveniently laid out in three quads or six duos perfectly coordinated to achieve day and night looks. SUN BUM: FUN IN THE SUN

Established in Cocoa Beach, Florida, by a band of sun worshipers, Sun Bum was created to make sun protection fun. According to stats, one in five people gets skin cancer due to sun exposure, so Sun Bum’s lotions are broad-spectrum sunscreens that protect skin from both UVA and UVB rays. They protect lips as well, with sunscreen lip balms in flavors like Coconut. In a country like ours where the sun blazes even if we’re not on the beach, Sun Bum is ideal for daily use.
