Ravena banned in PBA – FIBA

World governing cage body FIBA yesterday affirmed Kiefer Ravena’s suspension in all FIBA-sanctioned events, including the PBA, in the next 18 months for testing positive for three banned substances.

The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas had earlier sought a clarification on the scope of Ravena’s sacking and was hoping for a favorable response from the FIBA to allow the top PBA rookie to play for the NLEX Road Warriors in the local pro league and continue earning a livelihood while under suspension for international events.

“It is very clear in the ruling – all leagues, even events, except for activities relating to antidoping. It is clear that he is not allowed to play in any league,” said SBP president Al Panlilio.

During the course of his suspension by FIBA for doping failure, Ravena will instead serve as ambassador to spread awareness on substances prohibited by World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

PBA board chairman Ricky Vargas, also the president of the Philippine Olympic Committee, said they’re abiding by the FIBA ruling.

“We recognize that we are members of the SBP. As a member of the SBP, we respect the rules SBP would promulgate and that is in consonance with the FIBA ruling of

suspension,” said Vargas. The PBA is moving forward from this episode. “The PBA board has asked the commissioner (Willie Marcial) to look at what the other leagues do on such sanctions, get an idea from the NBA and the EuroLeague, and do research how they handle this thing,” said Vargas.

“The Commissioner’s Office has actually started a campaign already together with team doctors, physical therapists and team managers. They’re getting closer to WADA,” Vargas also said.

Panlilio said they would help Ravena in his advocacy. “Later on, we’ll make the appeal,” he said.
