Borja, Corpuz rule Ironkids

-

SUBIC BAY FREEPORT ZONE – Zedrick Borja and Samantha Corpuz harnessed their swimming prowess to the hilt and sustained their charge in the run as they reigned supreme in their respective divisions in the Alaska Ironkids aquathlon here yesterday.

Borja seemed to use the 400m swim course at the WOW Recreation and Activity Center pool as a workout for his upcoming tryout for the San Beda Alabang swimming team, emerging first in his pet event and never let up until the 3K run stage along Rizal Highway to rule the 13-14 boys side in 16:39.81.

Palarong Pambansa two-gold and fourbronze medalist Corpuz also showed how comfortable she is in the water, finishing the first phase in just five minutes and 35 seconds en route to ruling the girls’ 13-14 category at 17:23.39.

Her clocking in the swim course even bested that of Borja’s who logged 5:51 in the leg.

“I am always confident that I would make it. After the swim, I just maintained my speed,” said a beaming Borja minutes after crossing the finish line.

The thirteen-year-old pride of San Pedro, Laguna was 13 seconds clear of second placer Ronel Cruz, who timed 16:52.81.

Clifford Pusing, on his final year with the Ironkids, was bothered by a sore back he sustained last week and settled for third at 17:56.37.

The girls in the 13-14 division were sent off two minutes later than their counterparts but Corpuz still caught up with the last four swimmers of the boys group and was also unstoppable in the run to dominate her side.
