What JM’s dad should know

- RICARDO F. LO

A reader (Emilio Silvestre, no address given) took this columnist to task for “defending” (his word) JM de Guzman and his dad, Bulletin deskman Ronniel de Guzman, in an item seven issues ago. In that item,

Funfare mentioned that Ronniel was only after the welfare of his son JM when he “scolded” what he described as “BI” (Bad Influence) around JM who was pictured in an apparent “drinking session” with some friends that went viral on social media. Ronniel had an ugly exchange of words not only with the alleged “BI” but also with JM who threatened that if kept in a cage he would come out in “beast mode.” JM promptly took his words back and apologized to his dad. All’s well that ends well.

Said Silvestre, “I know you were defending JM’s dad because he’s your friend. But let me tell you this: his son JM is back in showbiz after coming out of two rehabs, doing well, as you wrote, in the ABS-CBN soap Araw Gabi. Well and good. JM’s dad should know that showbiz is not a ‘daycare center’ where he expects everybody to take care of his son and thus ‘behave’ when JM is around them.

“I presume that JM is old enough to see what is ‘good company’ and what is ‘bad company,’ and he should know which company to keep. He’s not fully recovered from rehab, all right, so his concerned dad should see to it that JM stays home after work and refrain from being with what his dad referred to as ‘BI’ who may be perhaps ‘guilty’ of drinking and not drug-taking as JM was (take note: past tense).

“Reverse the situation. How would JM’s dad react if what he called ‘BI’ accuses his son as the ‘BI’? He should stop blaming other people for what his son has become. JM has a mind of his own and I presume he knows what/who is good or what/who is bad for him. And also, instead of resorting to social media, shouldn’t he have ‘lectured’ his son in private so he wouldn’t have dragged other people into the mess?” (Dear Emilio Silvestre, thank you for airing your opinion on a showbiz issue gone viral. If JM’s dad is reading this, he’s welcome to air his side.)

A timely warning from RDL Pharmaceutical Lab

If showbiz denizens have been reading the news…I mean, “hard news” and not just gossipy showbiz news…they must have been sufficiently warned against fake beauty products flooding the market. I single out showbiz denizens because they constitute the bulk of beautyproducts users.

That’s why the warning from RDL, a pharmaceutical company, against fake products is timely. RDL Pharmaceutical Laboratory, Inc. is a 100 percent Filipino-owned corporation duly registered with the Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC) on Feb. 7, 2000, which engages in manufacturing, importing, exporting and selling highquality skin care, beauty and personal-care products.

At a recent presscon, RDL VP for Operations Mercedita Lim, a pharmacist, said that they sought the help of authorities because of the rampant counterfeiting of their skin-care products, inflicting millions of pesos in damage to their revenues.

“The safety of our customers is at stake,” said Mercedita. “That is the reason why we decided to get a certificate of registration not only here in the country but also from our international counterparts. The certification was issued by WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) International Bureau (Madrid), meaning the company can use and carry the name of RDL (Robert D. Lim) and its logo (a woman’s image that represents Lady Godiva) even outside the Philippines.”

The Lim family, led by matriarch Leonora D. Lim, started the business 32 years ago at the backyard of the family home in Davao with only P3,000 as capital.

Among the RDL endorsers are Kylie Versoza, Paulo Avelino, Albert Martinez, Enrique Gil and Coco Martin. (E-mail reactions at rickylophilstar@ gmail.com. For more updates, photos and videos, visit www.philstar.com/funfare or follow me on Instagram @therealrickylo.)
