Electronics group pushes renewable energy projects

- By RICHMOND MERCURIO

The electronics industry is urging the government to come up with a progressive plan for higher utilization of cleaner power sources.

Semiconductor and Electronic Industries in the Philippines Inc. (SEIPI) president Dan Lachica said the group is supportive of the renewable energy sector and hopes to see more of its various technologies utilized in the country

“Realistically, from an economics perspective, you can’t really get away from coal immediately. It’s still the cheapest source of power. We hope to see a progressive plan towards the more prevalent use of renewable energy. More conscientiousness in terms of sensitivity to the environment, and global warming considerations,” Lachica said.

“From an industry perspective, we support the use of renewable energy and hopefully, this will be integrated in long term energy supply security at low cost.

One of the products the SEIPI is looking at is batteries which will make the use of renewable energy 24/7 and reduce its price significantly.

The country has an aspirational target of 35 percent renewable energy share in the energy mix by 2030, which will be reviewed under the National Renewable Energy Program.

SEIPI is an organization of 316 multinational and Filipino-owned semiconductor and electronics companies, including the allied and support industries, as well as the academe.

The semiconductor and electronics industry serves as the largest contributor to the country’s manufacturing sector and total exports.
