New Comelec exec heads 2019 polls steering committee
Newly appointed Commission on Elections (Comelec) Commissioner Marlon Casquejo will have his hands full as he has been designated head of the steering committee for the 2019 midterm polls.
Speaking during Casquejo’s oath-taking, Comelec Chairman Sheriff Abas said the commission decided to appoint Casquejo as head of the committee. This means the latter will primarily oversee preparations for next year’s elections.
“We offered him the job and he readily accepted, without hesitations and complaints. That’s the mindset of a Comelec field officer,” Abas said.
Prior to his appointment by President Duterte, Casquejo was Comelec’s assistant regional director for the Davao region.
In an ambush interview, Casquejo admitted he was not expecting to have the position since he was just an “ordinary field officer.” He gave assurance, however, that he is prepared for the challenges that go with the position.
“I am not new here. I’ve been with the Comelec for 14 years and I will use whatever I (have) learned in my experience and expertise in the field of policymaking of the commission,” he added.
Casquejo said he applied for the post “so that I can capitalize on my experience that I have gained while working in the field.”
The official, however, said that coming from the same region as Duterte will not affect his work as commissioner, citing his track record in handling elections since 2004.
“One of my thrusts to prevent any doubts is transparency. I am not going to sacrifice my integrity, which I took care of for 14 years,” he added.
Casquejo is set to serve until Feb. 2, 2025.
