SMELLS LIKE MILLENNIAL SPIRIT

- THERESE JAMORA-GARCEAU

This season’s scents capture youth in a bottle. Fragrance companies are wooing the millennial market with a vengeance by formulating aromas for favorite pastimes like travel, partying with friends, and what to wear if you’re an #influencer. Here’s a guide to picking the scent that’s right for you:

For beach bums and bunnies

With its summer edition, Davidoff Cool Water Caribbean is all about freshness and being at the beach. Reminiscent of the classic Cool Water but lighter and fresher, Davidoff Cool Water Man Caribbean summer edition is a sparkling masculine scent with mandarin, lemon, and mint.

Ladies can choose between Cool Water Woman Caribbean summer edition, a sparkling fruit cooler with melon, pineapple and mint, or Cool Water Woman Sea Rose Caribbean summer edition, a more floral bouquet of roses spiked with mandarin and nashi pear.

At present the line is only available in large sizes, which should be great news for those who like bathing in Cool Water freshness.

For the party girl

“Amo” means “I love” in Italian, and that’ll be your first reaction to this creamy oriental floral. Bottling Italian bitters, vanilla and sandalwood in textured glass reminiscent of Ferragamo’s zigzag design pattern, Amo Ferragamo is made for socializing, traveling and seeing your friends. If you’re wearing this, you’re definitely going out.

For the mixologist

Those who enjoy sipping cocktails while decked out in designer heels will love Jimmy Choo Blossom. An accord of exotic fruits like mango, guava, and orange mixes with florals and woods to create a sparkling cocktail of a scent. You’ll be both shaken and stirred.

For the one who likes going on road trips

CK One Summer is all about the millennial road trip. Like all CK Ones it’s a unisex scent, with the added fun of a blue bottle that you can customize with stickers. A fresh, fizzy fragrance with whiffs of lime mojito and cedarwood, Pinoys will instantly gravitate towards the guava note at its heart.

For the free-spirited traveler

Judging by the name alone, Chloe Nomade is all about travel — even the bottle is inspired by the Chloe Drew bag, which would look smart dangling from your shoulder whether you’re in Paris or on an African safari. Redolent with freesia, oak moss and Mirabelle plum, you’ll also be leaving a very sophisticated trail in your wake.

For the bride getting ready for her big day

Known for his red-carpet stunners, designer Elie Saab is also known for his bridal collection, so Le Parfum in White is inspired by brides about to get married. You’ll definitely want to catch this lush bouquet of flowers like orange blossom, jasmine and peony, sweetened by fruity black currant and vanilla, and veiled by a chiffon-sheer base of white musks. This couture chypre is so pretty you’ll want to say “I do” over and over again.

For the queen bee looking to attract some honey

Issey Miyake’s L’Eau d’Issey Pure line started by reinventing the “scent” of water. Then came Pure Eau de Toilette, which smelled like a dewy flower petal brushed by a salty breeze. In Pure Nectar, the third and current iteration, the flower petal has bloomed into a 3D pink rose dripping with honey. Pure Nectar is sweet and feminine for day but would probably make an even greater impact at night — its rich, ambrosial qualities will probably draw male attention like bees to the proverbial flower.

For young lovers

After the successful launch of Calvin Klein Obsessed comes Obsessed Intense, which is like going from young love’s initial infatuation to a deepening of passions, or perhaps outright fixation. The idea was to smell your lover on your skin, hence the genders were subverted and the ladies’ scent was based on a masculine lavender accord, while the men’s scent highlighted typically feminine dark vanilla.

Obsessed’s clear bottles have given way to Intense’s black and gold, amber has been added for warmth, and the concentration of oils is higher to heighten the effect of smelling another on your skin — perfect for couples like Kate Moss and Mario Sorrenti, the young lovers who inspired the whole Obsessed campaign.

For the casual male

Since the past two Mr. Burberry fragrance launches have revolved around London, Mr. Burberry Indigo eau de toilette brings the Burberry man to the south British coast, where he sheds his trench coat and suit in favor of a T-shirt and jeans. Created by renowned perfumer Francis Kurkdjian, this scent is fresh and laidback, with lemon, spearmint and oak moss.

For the garden enthusiast

The newest fragrance from Dolce & Gabbana is Dolce Garden, a sweet, floriental gourmand targeting a younger market with its almond milk, coconut and vanilla notes wrapped around a heart of frangipani blossom. FYI, Dolce & Gabbana the couple hail from the south of Italy, so the inspirations are Italian gardens in Capri, Naples and Sicily. What can we say about such a charming scent and bottle? Molto, molto, molto.

For the one who wants to be pampered like a princess

After partying her heart out a girl must go home and pamper herself. The perfect spritz after a stint in the tub is Lanvin Modern Princess Eau Sensuelle, a more, um, sensual version of last year’s original Modern Princess with pink grapefruit and peach up top, a floral heart of peony and jasmine, and a carnal base of sandalwood and musk.

For the fashionista

You can’t get more on-trend than Marc Jacobs’ Daisy Twinkle collection, a spinoff on Jacobs’ iconic Daisy fragrance and inspired by the color of the year — purple. Daisy Twinkle opens with a burst of wild berries over a violet-flower heart; Daisy Eau So Fresh Twinkle effervesces with sparkling raspberry, violets and crème de cassis; while Daisy Dream Twinkle is a mouthwatering confection with black cherry and whipped berry mousse. Plus, the trio’s gorgeous, Instagrammable bottles were designed by Jacobs himself, in collaboration with Coty.

For the rose lover

After the phenomenal success of Amazing Grace and Pure Grace, Philosophy decided to add rose petals to both skin scents. Amazing Grace Ballet Rose is inspired by ballerinas and captures the strength and grace of the dance with delicate rose enveloped in lychee, peony, and sheer pink musk. Pure Grace Nude Rose is more like a whispered symphony: blush rose balanced by clean, dewy greens, neroli, orange flower, cedarwood and musk. It doesn’t shout, “I’m wearing perfume,” but wears like a second skin.
