- – Jose Rodel Clapano

The Philippine government is supporting the inclusion of a new performance indicator for maritime safety.

Maritime Industry Authority administrator Rey Guerrero conveyed the government’s position on July 2 to the International Maritime Organization, which held the 120th Session of the IMO Council in London from July 2 to 6.

Guerrero said the government supports the inclusion of number of serious incidents per year per vessel type as a new performance indicator for maritime safety in the IMO’s Strategic Plan for 2018 to 2023.

Marina’s attendance at the IMO meeting is part of the Philippines’ commitment as one of the 40 members of the IMO Council, the executive body responsible for supervising the work of the organization.

While in London, Guerrero met with representatives of the European Commission (EC) to provide updates on the status of Philippines’ compliance with the outstanding issues that the European Maritime Safety Agency raised on the country’s maritime education, training and certification system.

He also assured the EC of the country’s continuing commitment to meet its obligations under the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers.
