Lumapas tops 200m dash for second gold

Jessel Lumapas turned in another golden run, topping the 200m dash to claim her second victory in the ASEAN School Games at the Mini-Stadium in Bukit Jalil in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Monday.

Lumapas, a Grade 11 standout of Nazareth School of National U, clocked 25.03 seconds to nail her second gold and Team Phl’s fifth in the event featuring the region’s top and rising student athletes.

Teammate Decerie Jane Niala took the silver in 25.07 seconds while Indonesia’s Nuryanti Erna timed 25.25 seconds for third.

The 17-year-old Lumapas, who hails from Dasmariñas City, Cavite, earlier ruled the girls’ 400m run (57.46 seconds) and will seek a third gold in the 4x400m event.

“We’ll see. We’ll do our best. I believe in my teammates,” said Lumapas, who dedicates her feat to her parents.

Meanwhile, Pinoy teen tracksters Tara Borlain and Bernalyn Bejoy settled for silver and bronze medals, respective­ly, in 800m girls event topped by Vietnam’s Ngo Thi Khanh Ny in two minutes, 13.90 seconds. Borlain clocked 2:15.54 and Bejoy 2:17.51. Over at the Gymnastics Gymnasium, Justine Ace de Leon captured the silver medal in the boys’ artistic gymnastics’ vault event. He received a final score of 13.533 points with Trinh Hai Khang from Vietnam winning the coveted gold with 13.717 points.

Althea Descutido also salvaged a bronze in the club’s event finals of the girls rhythmic gymnastics.

The Phl is ranked sixth with five gold, five silver, and 10 bronze medals with Malaysia way out up front with a 23-gold, 24-silver, 19-bronze haul followed by Indonesia (1917-22), Thailand (12-16-19), Vietnam (12-7-6), and Singapore (6-8-10).
