Bong Go cites tourism benefits for LGUs
Special Assistant to the President Christopher “Bong” Go urged members of the Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines (ATOP) to help boost the promotion and protection of different tourist destinations in the Philippines.
In a meeting with the group recently, Go said tourism can be one of the best ways to promote the development of communities throughout the country.
“Tourism is important for communities. Tourism officers as promoters of our country’s various assets do not only bring in income to LGUs and local entrepreneurs, you also help us guard our natural resources and help us enlighten and educate the public on how to enjoy our country without exploiting it,” he said.
ATOP is a nationwide organization of local tourism officers from all over the country. It was formed in 2000 to promote the culture of tourism at the community level.
Go noted that ATOP was one of the first groups that came out with a resolution in April 2018 for the rehabilitation of tourism spots like Boracay – before President Duterte stepped in.
“Your job is not only to promote but also help both locals and tourists in protecting the welfare of our stakeholders. If the environment is destroyed, the livelihood of small entrepreneurs who earn from tourism will also be adversely affected,” he said.
Go said the President also wants to support the promotion of other tourist attractions in the country.
“If you need any help, the President and I are ready to give any assistance for the country’s tourism industry,” he said.
