PRC: Shelter assistance, relief ops just the beginning of ‘Ompong’ efforts
The Philippine Red Cross’ efforts to restore the lives of families hit by Typhoon Ompong is far from over as Chairman Richard Gordon gave his assurance that the organization will continue to address the long-term needs of affected communities.
Last Sept. 23, Gordon led the distribution of shelter repair kits consisting of roofing materials (10 corrugated galvanized iron sheets), nails, sealants and ham- mer to 393 families from Baggao, as well as basic household items to 355 families from Gattaran in partnership with the Qatar Red Crescent Society and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. Both are among the most affected municipalities.
“Even before Ompong’s onslaught, our assessment teams have been working hard to determine the immediate needs in the affected communities. But this does not end here. We are working fast to address the long-term needs of thousands of families who were left with uncertainties due to the disruption of their livelihood sources,” Gordon said during the press conference prior to the distribution of shelter repair kits in Baggao.
PRC is looking at providing seedlings to families in Cagayan considering that rice and corn crops, which serve as the primary of source of income in the province, were heavily damaged by Ompong’s strong winds.
Gordon also encouraged the community to start disaster resilience within themselves by teaching the children how to predict, plan, prepare, and practice in times of disasters and emergencies.
