Janine sings for Broken Hearted

- BABY A. GIL

Janine Teñoso started her singing career in the diva mold. She was one of the contestants who made it to the finals in the TV talent search Born To

Be A Star. Armed with a gorgeous alto and striking good looks, she seemed destined for stardom.

But then the teen-aged Janine was in some ways different from the usual singing contest winners of three years ago, who just sang. She was also a songwriter who wanted to record her own works. In fact, she went around with a little notebook where she would jot down ideas for songs. And that was how she made her recording debut. She recorded her own composition, a soulful ballad about heartbreak titled Fall.

The song went well and Janine was off to a good start. But then, songs for movie soundtracks became tremendously popular. Truth to tell, sales from these were what kept the local music industry above water while it was transitioning into digital sales. And Janine, the new promising talent, was, of course, drafted by her Viva label to sing in motion picture soundtracks.

It was her well-received cover of the Rivermaya classic 241 for the box-office hit 100 Tula Kay Stella that sent Janine’s career rising swiftly to the top. This was followed by an even bigger success. She was given Di Na Muli, the grand prize winner from the Philpop songwriting competition of two years ago where it was interpreted by the rock band Itchyworms.

Composed by Jazz Nicholas of Itchyworms and Wally Acolola, the wistful waltz was chosen to be theme of the Anne Curtis and Dingdong Dantes starrer Sid & Aya (Not A Love Story). The movie about an unconventional romance became a huge blockbuster and everybody loved Janine’s take on Di Na Muli.

That happened some months ago but to this day, Di Na Muli maintains a strong presence in the hit charts and the shy and quiet Janine had become one of the most in-demand young performers around. And mind you, hopes are high that she will shine even brighter within these next few weeks.

This is because, Janine has a new movie theme out in the market and it is turning out to be another big one. This is Ang Awit

Natin, a lovely ballad about love lost that brings back the Di Na Muli team of Jazz, Wally and Janine. It is the theme of the forthcoming movie Para Sa Broken Hearted, which Jazz will also score. Para sa Broken Hearted is based on the bestselling novel written by the extremely prolific Marcelo Santos III. He is the same guy behind the popular series of books about love relationships with intriguing but very easy to relate to titles like Para Sa Hopeless Romantic, Mahal Mo Siya Mahal Ka Ba?, Move On Walang Forever, The Iwas Sawi Project and others. Everybody who enjoyed reading Para Sa Broken Hearted will now have the chance to see their loved characters come to life on the big screen. The movie, directed by Digo Ricio, stars Yassi Pressman as Shalee; Louise de los Reyes as Kath; Shy Carlos as Jackie; Sam Concepcion as Alex and Marco Gumabao as RJ. Their intertwined love stories continue to fascinate readers all over the country. Marcelo Santos III has sold and still sells a lot of copies of Para Sa Broken Hearted. Expect the number to still increase now that it will get the added boost of its own theme song.

Check out Ang Awit Natin on Spotify, iTunes, Apple Music and other digital music stores. And I say, as well as the other songs in the soundtrack, like the very hot new release Bukas Makalawa performed by Broken Hearted leading man Sam.

And now, a look at the hits of the moment as per the latest Spotify chart.
