MacroAsia Corp., the listed aviation services company of taipan Lucio Tan, has received the green light from Malacañang to designate a five-hectare property within the Mactan Cebu International Airport as a special economic zone.

The property, currently rented by Lufthansa Technik Philippines – a joint venture of MacroAsia and Lufthansa Technik AG of Germany -- is now called the MacroAsia Cebu Special Ecozone.

According to its website, Lufthansa Technik provides line maintenance services to a wide range of customers.

“The base maintenance service spectrum includes cabin reconfiguration retrofit programs and lease return checks available as a standalone product or integrated into long-term contracts. It is precisely this capability that has enabled Lufthansa Technik Philippines to successfully implement the A330 cabin reconfiguration project which contributed to Philippine Airline’s achievement of their upgraded 4-star airline rating from Skytrax,” Lufthansa said.

With the conversion of the Cebu property as an economic zone, Lufthansa Technik has room to expand its operations in Cebu as it can import raw materials, duty free.

Lufthansa Technik’s facility is located at the center of Southeast Asia, within a fourhour flight radius of major international hubs in Asia such as Singapore and Hong Kong.

Within a special economic zone at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, the facility occupies a 200,000 square meter property with eight hangar bays and nine aircraft parking slots.

Its facility can accommodate two Airbus A380s for base and heavy maintenance simultaneously.

Through its satellite offices in Cebu, Clark and Davao, it also providse aircraft line maintenance support to domestic and international airlines.

MacroAsia, meanwhile, is a listed company that is known as a globally competitive provider of aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul, ground handling, airline catering and foods services management among others.
