China donates school building to Davao City barangay

- By EDITH REGALADO

DAVAO CITY – The Chinese government is increasing its presence in the city, hometown of President Duterte.

Aside from a soon-to-open consulate in the city, the embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Philippines is funding a school building project consisting of 13 two-story and four-classroom buildings furnished with furniture and teaching facilities for elementary and high schools in Barangay Agdao.

Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Zhao Jianhua led the groundbreaking ceremony yesterday for the donation of the school facilities, with Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio and other local officials attending.

Zhao said the project is expected to greatly improve local education conditions in the city as more than 2,000 students will benefit from the project.

“The Philippines is the only country in the world that celebrates a month-long Teachers’ Day. It illustrates that the Philippine government as well as Davao City both attach great importance to education. Our contribution is relatively small compared to what you need and compared to relentless efforts of Davao City to advance the education cause,” Zhao said.

He added that Davao City is going to be a top priority when it comes to assistance from China.

“China and the Philippines are now making steady progress in such infrastructure projects as a bridge over Davao River, a bridge linking Davao and Samal and the railway and expressway systems in Davao. We would like to demonstrate to the Philippine people that China will always be your good friend, good partner and good relative,” Zhao further said.

The mayor thanked the Chinese embassy’s generosity, pointing out that the donation signifies a shared commitment of various stakeholders to prioritize the education of our youth.

“To the chosen schools, may the new buildings boost your quality of education for our children. As we celebrate the World Teachers’ Day today, may this project reinvigorate everyone to educate our children and help them become responsible citizens and attain a better and brighter future,” the mayor said.

Zhao said the donation is a sincere appreciation of President Duterte’s policy on China. Under his determination and wisdom, the two countries have strengthened the traditional friendship and enhanced cooperation in various fields including education.

“Firstly, education is the key to the betterment of the young people. With better education, they will be more qualified to ensure a better personal life and the future of the nation and the people will be even brighter. Secondly, this donation of school buildings is only the beginning. I can assure you that China will do our utmost to share our experience and skills with the Philippines and Davao City in the coming years,” he added.
