Philippine College of Surgeons presents breakthroughs in surgery
The Philippine College of Surgeons (PCS), which celebrated its Ruby Jubilee (82nd anniversary) this year, collaborated with top Italian pharmaceutical company A. Menarini (A. Menarini Philippines Inc.) and the Menarini Academy to organize scientific sessions during the 74th Annual PCS Clinical Congress.
Themed “Resolving Conflicts in Surgery: From the Basic to the Complex,” the congress discussed the current developments in surgery which included the use of multimodal approach such as the new fixed-dose combination of a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID, e.g. Dexketoprofen) and an opioid such as Tramadol to achieve better control of pain after surgery. This strategy optimizes the benefit of synergistic mechanisms that can be achieved through a powerful combination that can address a multifaceted medical condition such as pain, thereby reaching therapeutic endpoints.
The scientific sessions during the congress also served as a venue for experts to discuss the fast evolving treatment landscape in the management of post-operative pain.
Studies have shown that inadequately relieved post-op pain can have serious short-term and long-term consequences that may be detrimental to the patient.
In moderate to severe pain, it can be difficult to obtain effective analgesia with a single drug.
The PCS is the leading organization of board-certified Filipino surgeons in the country who are strongly committed to excellence and ethical practice in this highly esteemed field of medicine. Currently, there are 10 surgical specialty and 12 surgical sub-specialty societies under the PCS.
“We are pleased to collaborate with A. Menarini in achieving our shared goal of providing high-quality continuing professional development opportunities to Filipino surgeons, which is key to enhancing surgical management and patient care,” said PCS vice president Dr. George G. Lim.
“The Menarini Academy is privileged to partner with the PCS in providing Filipino surgeons with updates on cutting-edge techniques such as robotics surgery applied to the surgical management of patients. The daylong scientific sessions featured a powerhouse lineup of international experts in surgery and pain management, including renowned Spanish pain specialist Professor Antonio Montero who shared his insights on dilemmas in post-operative pain management,” said Dr. Grace Nilo, medical affairs director, A. Menarini Philippines.
“It was a great honor to represent an organization, which for over eight decades has delivered quality and safe surgical care to Filipinos. Through continuing medical education and strategic alliances with key partners such as A. Menarini, the PCS will continue to fulfill its mandate of serving our country and our people,” said PCS president Dr. Alejandro C. Dizon.
An initiative of A. Menarini Philippines, Menarini Academy is rooted in the company’s long-term mission of partnering with healthcare professionals to provide high-value continuing medical education for the advancement of patient care.
