Feverish Rody skips AFP change of command

- By CHRISTINA MENDEZ – With Jaime Laude

President Duterte skipped last night the change of command ceremony at the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), which saw outgoing AFP chief Gen. Benjamin Madrigal Jr. turning over command to new military chief Gen. Noel Clement at Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City.

Presidential spokesman Salvador Panelo cited Duterte’s punishing schedule, hinting also that the 74-year-old Chief Executive was nursing a fever.

“The punishing schedule of official and social events the previous days has slightly affected the President’s body temperature. He opted to rest so he can be his usual healthy self in no time,” he said.

Panelo did not directly answer queries on why the President was indisposed.

Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana represented the President during the event that was also attended by Vice President Leni Robredo, National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon Jr. and Interior Secretary Eduardo Año.

Bangsamoro Transition Authority interim chief Murad Ibrahim and his delegation were also present.

Madrigal and Clement were classmates at the Philippine Military Academy “Sandiwa” Class of 1985.

The AFP said Clement is a multi-decorated officer, having had four Distinguished Service Star medals, one Outstanding Achievement Medal, three Bronze Cross Medals, two Meritorious Achievement Medals and various other awards and commendations.

Panelo earlier in the day revealed that Duterte attended his surprise birthday party late Monday at the posh, membersonly Manila House private club in Taguig.

According to Panelo, the guest performers included Anthony Castelo, Malu Barry and Gretchen Barreto.

George Yang of McDonalds was also present during the surprise party organized by Panelo’s wife and children.

“(VIP guests) like the President himself singing. Like the First Lady herself singing. So it was really ano … walang oras magkuwentuhan doon; enjoy lang kami,” Panelo said.
