‘Our health is in our hands’

-

Across centuries, several scientific discoveries and developments have arisen in the field of medicine, but the basic habit of washing the hands with soap and water remains the most effective and affordable way to prevent diseases.

Global Handwashing Day (GHD) is a global advocacy, dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding about the importance of proper handwashing with clean water and soap. With the theme “Clean Hands for All,” this year’s Global Handwashing Day aims to tap all parts of the society that are often not reached by these advocacies.

In celebration of the GHD, Manila Water Foundation (MWF), the social development arm of the Manila Water enterprise in the Philippines, emphasizes the importance of proper handwashing with clean water and soap during critical times. This is line with the company’s banner campaign dubbed “Health in Our Hands.”

Today’s event at Mariano Marcos Memorial High School in Sta. Ana, Manila is highlighted by an inspirational message and call to action from GHD 2019 ambassador, Robi Domingo.

Manila City Mayor Isko Moreno will also grace the event and lead the ribbon-cutting ceremony of a handwashing facility in the school.

Another event partner, Adarna House, will hold a storytelling activity about the importance of proper hygiene. Students will also be participating in an on-the-spot poster making contest.

Parents and community members can also join the celebration by participating in a cooking demo and a medical mission that will stress the importance of proper handwashing in relation to food preparation, nutrition, and overall well-being.

Since 2013, MWF has been one of the most visible and active proponents of the GHD in the Philippines because part of its core advocacy is hygiene education. This year, true to the theme “Clean Hands for All,” Manila Water Foundation extended its celebration of GHD to its partner communities. Last October 4, Manila Water Foundation organized a kick-off event at Sitio Monicayo, an Aeta community in Mabalacat, Pampanga where one of MWF’s water facilities under its Integrated WASH program stands today. Aside from that, MWF will be closing the GHD monthlong celebration in another Aeta community at Barangay Sapang Uwak in Porac, Pampanga.
