President Duterte enjoined the nation yesterday to have a meaningful observance of All Souls’ and All Saints’ Days by making a positive impact on society.

In a one-page message released by Malacañang, Duterte expressed hope that the entire Filipino Christian community would observe a meaningful and solemn holiday.

“In these days of remembrance, we honor our dearly departed loved ones by praying for the eternal repose of their souls and cherishing fond memories of the time they spent with us,” said Duterte, who visited his parents’ tomb on Thursday night.

Amid the negativity around, the President urged Filipinos to rethink and reflect on their roles in nation building.

“Let us dedicate our time, skills, and knowledge so we may make a positive and meaningful impact on our society while we pursue meaningful goals for our people and country,” he said.

The celebration of All Saints’ Day was peaceful and orderly even as thousands of people flocked to Metro Manila’s 118 cemeteries and columbariums yesterday, according to National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) chief Brig. Gen. Debold Sinas.

At least 951,002 people went to cemeteries and columbariums as of 2 p.m. yesterday. The NCRPO said the Northern Police District reported a crowd estimate of 46,475; Eastern Police District, 52,987; Manila Police District, 620,400; Southern Police District, 149,840; and Quezon City Police District, 81,300.

Sinas said no untoward incidents were reported as of noon yesterday.
