Bayanihan is in our blood: Give blood, get love

The term bayanihan describes the Filipino spirit of solidarity, civic unity, and cooperation. It’s a value that bands communities together to help each other in times of need.

To this day, the bayanihan spirit is alive and well. It’s seen in large and small-scale acts that positively impact people’s lives – from providing relief to disaster-hit areas, the establishment of community pantries to help curb hunger, to the simple act of donating blood.

THE STATE OF PHILIPPINE BLOOD SUPPLY

Since 1997, Blood Donor Month has been celebrated every July to encourage Filipinos to donate blood. In 2021, 1.01 percent of the Philippines’ total adult population became blood donors amid the pandemic. This means we have more than one million units of donated blood for all Filipinos.

A safe and accessible blood supply is an essential component in any healthcare delivery system. Aside from playing a critical role in our country’s response to emerging diseases, natural disasters, and emergencies, a safe blood supply also helps address maternal mortality in the country – possibly saving the lives of young moms at risk of postpartum hemorrhage.

Additionally, a steady blood supply will help other populations at risk such as patients afflicted with dengue, thalassemia, and cancer.

However, the rising number of COVID-19 cases may affect public confidence in donating blood to the nearest blood centers. It is important for blood centers and hospitals to reassure the public that donating blood remains safe. This is due to our strict adherence to minimum public health standards and safety protocols.

HOW GIVING BLOOD SAVES LIVES

Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is excessive bleeding that follows the birth of a baby. At a rate of 16 percent since 2014, recent data from the Department of Health (DOH) shows that PPH is one of the leading causes of death among moms.

Reducing maternal deaths in the country will require a collective effort from both medical and societal groups. Replacing lost blood and fluids is important in the treatment of PPH. To help ensure safer pregnancies and deliveries, the “Give blood, Get Love” project was established with support from Abbott, to encourage more Filipinos to donate blood for young Filipino moms.

One pint of donated blood can help save as many as three lives. For anyone willing to donate blood, both the PRC and DOH have prepared guidelines to ensure donor safety and to maintain public health protocols.

To donate, find the nearest PRC blood donation center or to schedule an appointment by calling 0917-4379377.
