Dolly de Leon on BAFTA nom: It means a lot to me
Despite not winning the Best Supporting Actress plum at the 2023 British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs), Triangle of Sadness star Dolly de Leon said that being nominated was already an honor in itself.
“It means a lot to me. They say I’m the first Filipina to be nominated (for a BAFTA) , so it’s a huge honor for me,” she said in a red-carpet interview with the British Film Institute (BFI) ahead of the awards event at the Royal Albert Hall in London on Sunday, Feb. 19 (Monday morning, Feb. 20, in Manila.)
The Filipina actress also expressed her pride in having worked with Swedish director Ruben Ostlund in the Palme d’Or-winning social class satire, where she played a luxury ship’s toilet cleaner-turned-“captain” after a sea accident.
“To be able to be part of a monumental film like Triangle of Sadness, I’m so proud to be here because it was such a great production,” Dolly said.
She described it as an eye-opening experience that helped her grow as an actress that’s why “I’m really happy to be here.”
Dolly also thanked the BFI for funding the dark comedy. “It’s very important that the voices of independent filmmakers are also heard because they have plenty of important stories to tell and that society needs to hear,” she said.
It was Kerry Condon who was named Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Banshees of Inisherin, beating nominees Dolly, Angela Bassett (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), Hong Chau (The Whale), Jamie Lee Curtis (Everything Everywhere All At Once), and Carey Mulligan (She Said).
Prior to the BAFTAs, Dolly became the first Filipino to get a Golden Globe nod. She also won the Best Supporting Performance award at the LA Film Critics Association Awards and Sweden’s Guldbagge Awards.
Dolly is set to film a Hollywood comedy, where she will play the stepmom of actor Jason Schwartzman, in March.
