Are Julia, Diego OK to be friends with their exes?
JULIA BARRETTO AND DIEGO LOYZAGA WILL team up for Viva Films’ upcoming flick Will You Be My Ex?, a story about an ex-couple who later will become friends and each other’s constant throughout their lives.
According to creative producer Jon Versoza, the film is about “postdissolution friendship” between Christina (Julia) and Joey (Diego). He detailed in a virtual interview that the story revolves around “a friendship between two people who broke off a romantic relationship in the past and are each other’s pillars in the present.”
“They are each other’s constant through it all and shows us why when they’re not together, as exes, everything seems to be much better than being together,” he added. “But being each other’s comfort zones through it all, can they still make it as each other’s ‘love of their lives?’ As each other’s one true friend? Or as each other’s the one that got away?”
In the movie, Julia’s Chris is a free-spirited and fun-loving woman from a family of artists and theater actors. Diego’s Joey is a quiet, formal young man from a wellrespected family.
On how close she is to her character, Julia said there is nothing similar between her real-life persona and Chris, except for a passion for acting. “But other than that, I guess her impulsiveness, the immaturity level, the love of Chris in this story is very different from who Julia is now. But I can understand where is this coming from because I have been in her place before,” she said.
“But if we are talking about Julia now and Chris, there’s only one thing in common and that’s the love for acting. This is why I super enjoy what I do because I get to really be somebody else for quite a while and experience her pains, her joys, her frustrations, absolutely everything,” she shared and added that’s what she is looking forward to in the film, “to be in the shoes of Chris.”
Diego, for his part, simply stated that he could relate more to the character of Julia than his. “Mas may similarities kami than my character. That’s all I can say.”
When asked if they are willing to be friends with their exes and up to what extent, Diego answered first, “Yeah, definitely,” adding, “It depends siguro kung anong nangyari sa inyo if OK kayo nag-end. I guess you can be friends. And up to what extent? That depends because after the relationship, if you guys can be friends, parang it’s a new relationship, new dynamics… So it depends on what extent can you be friends.”
Bea Binene, who is also part of the cast, also answered, “For me, maybe not right away. Maybe not friends as in friends. Maybe civil. I believed in the saying, ‘Time heals.’ Siguro patagal ng patagal, as time goes by, (maybe it will happen.) As you get matured pa patagal ng patagal yung panahon siguro mas ma-accept mo with everything that happened.
“And kumbaga kaya mong tingnan eye-toeye yung ex mo when you have accepted (what happened). It really depends, maybe time heals, maybe in time. But not like friendsfriends, like chummy-chummy friends,” she added.
Julia laughingly said, “I’m happy with the answers of Bea and Diego. Kasi parang ang aga bukas may headline na eh (laughs). Baka sa presscon na lang, pag-showing na tayo (I will answer that). But I agree sa mga answers ni Bea and Diego.”
Julia and Diego have previously collaborated in Wansapanataym’s
episode Petrang Paminta in 2013 and Mirabella in 2014. Julia is thrilled to work with Diego again. She shared, “He has been a friend of mine for a very long time. Apparently, we’ve worked together twice now. But (I’m) excited to be working with him this time around.
“We’re a bit older now. I hope we’re a bit more mature now. But this is an interesting story. I just can’t wait to get on the set and just be in a vulnerable state with Diegs and be able to open up to each other,” she added.
Will You Be My Ex? is helmed by Real Florido, also the director of 1st Ko si 3rd, which won him an international award at the London Film Awards and Canada International Film Festival.
