Dolly de Leon excited to attend 2023 Oscars

- By NATHALIE M. TOMADA

Dolly de Leon is hoping her film Triangle of Sadness wins an award at the 2023 Oscars happening this Monday morning (Manila time).

The Cannes Palme d’Or-winning social class satire earned Oscar nominations for Best Film as well as Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for its Swedish filmmaker Ruben Ostlund.

“Hope so, too! I’m also excited to reunite with the cast as four of us will be going aside from Ruben, of course,” she recently told The Philippine STAR. What will she be wearing? “As for the outfit, who knows I may just go in sneakers and trousers. Malay natin, ‘di ba? But what’s for sure is I’ll be wearing the blue ribbon again in solidarity with UNHCR and the refugees they’re helping all over the world to live in a peaceful home and brighter future,” she said.

In a previous STAR interview, the Filipino actress expressed desire to score an invite to the awards ceremony even as she failed to nab a Supporting Actress nomination for her performance in the film. She previously landed in forecast lists, embarked on an extensive campaign, and got Golden Globe and British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) nods in the lead-up to the 95th Academy Awards.

“Definitely, hoping for that,” she said. “I wanna go. I want to experience (it).”

Touted as Hollywood’s biggest night, the Academy Awards is streaming live on Disney+ today, March 13, with the pre-show red carpet at 6:30 a.m. and the award show itself airing at 8 a.m.

It’s been a historic awardsseason journey for Dolly. She became the first Filipino actor to be nominated at the Golden Globes and BAFTAs, and to win at the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards as well as the Guldbagge Awards, which is Sweden’s equivalent of the Oscars.

Dolly has been using the awards-season buzz and newfound recognition to drum up interest and support for advocacies close to her heart. Besides the UN Refugee Agency UNHCR, she lent her voice to the art advocacy program, Project Hulmahan, which she and her group Ladies Who Launch recently established to help Marikina shoemakers as well as other communities nationwide.

Over 700 artists from all over the country turned some 1,500 wooden shoe lasts into amazing artworks for auction. The official unveiling of Project Hulmahan will be held on Wednesday, March 15, 6 p.m. at Estancia Mall.
