UGEP targets up to 700 MW of solar projects by 2028

Solar energy solutions provider Upgrade Energy Philippines (UGEP) is embarking on an aggressive target of installing up to 700 megawatts (MW) of solar projects by 2028.

The company, which is among the key players in the country’s commercial and industrial solar sectors, said its growth plan includes both utility-scale and commercial and industrial solar rooftop and ground-mounted projects.

“We are very bullish on the growth of solar in the country. UGEP creates efficient and sustainable power solutions for its clients. We are backed by the strong experience of our shareholders and management team,” UGEP president and CEO Ruth Yu-Owen said.

UGEP has a diverse portfolio of commercial and industrial solar projects across the country, with installation in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

UGEP said its target of installing 700 MW of solar projects by 2028 would support the government’s goal of achieving a 35 percent renewable energy share in the power mix by 2035, and reflects its strong commitment to promoting clean energy and sustainability in the Philippines.

The company said it is well-positioned to play a leading role in the country’s transition to a renewable energy future with its track record of successful projects.

“We believe that the future energy landscape will be one of 100 percent renewable energy, strategically located close to demand centers and sized appropriately as to limit grid constraints and minimize losses,” Yu-Owen said.

UGEP has entered into a joint venture with Aboitiz Power Corp. subsidiary AboitizPower Distributed Renewables Inc. to pursue solar rooftop and ground-mounted projects for commercial and industrial consumers in the country.

The company is also developing multiple utility-scale solar projects, including a 50 MW utility-scale solar project in Luzon.

UGEP recently completed the 13.811-MW roof-mounted solar power project for JG Summit’s Merbau facility in Batangas City.

The project is considered the largest consumer-driven solar rooftop installation in the Philippines.
