Not everyone’s idea of fun

- – JHON STEVEN C. ESPENIDO, Surigao City espenidojhonsteven@gmail.com

In 2018, I created a travelogue about my experience as a local tourist in Bohol titled “Fun Never Stops in Bohol,” inspired by a fellow writer who shares the common belief that fun truly never ends in Bohol.

I never thought Bohol would be one of the beautiful places I would get to visit until my family and I went there in 2017. While it may not be as internationally famous as Siargao, Boracay or Palawan, Bohol also holds prominence for its fantastic dive spots, delicious food and picture-perfect sights that can easily capture anyone’s heart. I consider myself lucky to have seen its beauty as well as felt the warmth of the congenial locals.

Furthermore, among its wonders is the world-renowned Chocolate Hills, featuring mound-shaped hills that appear almost identical. Just to fully appreciate its allure, I remember that we climbed 214 steps for a wider view of hundreds of lush green and chocolatecolored hills, despite the pain it caused our feet.

However, what pains me now, relatively speaking, is learning from the news that a resort is being constructed on what has been known as a National Geologic Monument and a Protected Landscape, designated by then-president Fidel Ramos back in 1997.

In addition, it is fair to say that the resort is controversial. Not only does its construction prompt numerous comments, mostly negative, but it also shapes the minds of Filipinos, suggesting a lack of respect for the natural heritage and environmental regulations in place. On the other hand, it is also important to let due process unfold.

Thus, one thing can be certain: constructing something within such a cherished location is not everyone’s idea of fun.
