Leonor Bessa and CarLos Laranja win at Quinta do Peru
One month after two sixteen year old players won the Circuito Allianz 5th tournament, at Montebelo (Viseu), it was the turn of another sixteen year old athlete to win the 6th and last 2016 event of the Federação Portuguesa de Golf (FPG – Portuguese golf federation) organized tournament at the Quinta do Peru Golf & Country Club (Sesimbra). Ladies’ was won by twice national sub -18 champion Leonor Bessa. Leonor Bessa was the leading figure in this circuit, winning three of the six tournaments, the first, at the Penina Hotel & Golf Resort (Algarve) in January; the fourth, at Golfe Quinta do Vale (Algarve), in July and now in Azeitão. She was the uncontested number one in the Gold category in the Allianz ranking. “On the first day I hit better than on the second, but I didn’t putt as well. On the second day I did poorly on the approach shots, but I managed to convert three birdies on the last nine holes, and thus turn the game around,” said Leonor Bessa to the FPG Press Office, after totalling 149 strokes, five over par, with rounds of 76 and 73. Portugal’s 2015 number one amateur, who finished second in this year’s BPI National Ranking left Sara Gouveia in second place in this 6th Allianz tournament. Also 16 years old, she finished two strokes behind the winner, with rounds of 78 and 73. National amateur champion, Joana Silveira, also 16 years old, finished third (79+78), 8 behind Bessa. As to Carlos Laranja he attained his most important victory in his still very short amateur career, summing 141 strokes, 3 under par, with rounds of 73 and 68, the last being the best result amongst 70 players. The Madeiran beat the best Portuguese amateur players. It was surprising to realize that the players from the national amateur team didn’t make the top 3. Second place thus went to a former member of the national team, Gonçalo Costa, who has been a bit distant this year, but who had promised to train more seriously in the last months of the year, after finishing his university degree. The Lisbon Sports Club player finished one stroke from the winner (71+71). Carlos Laranja’s success can’t really be seen as a surprise. Despite his youth, he had already been runner-up in the third Circuito Allianz tournament, in Praia d’El Rey (Obidos) and was third in the Lisbon Cup, at the Lisbon Sports Club (Belas). “I quite value this victory, as the best national players were here. The round of 68 was my best, my lowest ever in an important tournament, like this one” said the Clube de Golfe do Santo da Serra player.
Um mês depois de dois jogadores de 16 anos terem conquistado o 5º torneio do Circuito Allianz, no Golfe de Montebelo, nos arredores de Viseu, foi a vez de outro atleta da mesma idade, Carlos Laranja, impor-se no 6º e último evento de 2016 do mesmo circuito organizado pela Federação Portuguesa de Golfe (FPG) no Quinta do Peru Golf & Country Club, no concelho de Sesimbra. A prova feminina foi ganha pela bicampeã nacional de sub-18, Leonor Bessa. Leonor Bessa foi a grande dominadora deste Circuito Allianz, levando a melhor em três dos seis torneios, começando logo no 1º, no Penina Hotel & Golf Resort, no Algarve, em janeiro; repetindo depois o sucesso no 4º, no Golfe da Quinta do Vale, em julho, também no Algarve; e agora em Azeitão. Foi a nº1 incontestada da Categoria Ouro do Ranking Allianz. “No primeiro dia bati melhor (na bola) do que no segundo, mas não ‘patei’ tão bem. No segundo dia estive mal no shot ao green, mas consegui converter 3 birdies nos últimos nove buracos e assim dar a volta ao jogo”, disse Leonor Bessa ao Gabinete de Imprensa da FPG, depois de totalizar 149 pancadas, 5 acima do Par, consequência de voltas de 76 e 73. A nº1 nacional amadora de 2015, que este ano terminou no 2º lugar do Ranking Nacional BPI, deixou no 2º posto do 6º Torneio Allianz Sara Gouveia, de 16 anos, a 2 pancadas de distância, autora de voltas de 78 e 73. A campeã nacional amador, Joana Silveira, também de 16 anos, terminou no 3º posto (79+78) a 8 de Bessa. Quanto a Carlos Laranja, obteve a mais importante vitória da sua ainda muito curta carreira amadora, somando 141 pancadas, 3 abaixo do Par, entregando cartões de 73 e 68, sendo este último o melhor registo dos 70 participantes. O madeirense bateu os melhores golfistas amadores portugueses, mas fui surpreendente que os principais membros da seleção nacional amadora não conseguiram sequer terminar no top-3. O 2º lugar (-2) foi, assim, para um antigo membro da seleção nacional, Gonçalo Costa, que este ano andou apagado, mas que tinha prometido voltar a treinar a sério nos meses finais do ano, depois de concluídos os estudos universitários. O jogador do Lisbon Sports Club ficou a 1 pancada do vencedor (71+71). O êxito de Carlos Laranja não pode ser considerado uma grande surpresa. Apesar de jovem, já tinha conseguido este ano ser vice-campeão no 3º Torneio do Circuito Allianz, em Praia d’El Rey (Óbidos), e 3º na Lisbon Cup, no Lisbon Sports Club (Belas). “Valorizo bastante esta vitória porque estavam aqui os melhores jogadores nacionais. A volta de 68 foi a minha melhor, a minha mais baixa em torneios importantes como este”, disse o jogador do Clube de Golfe do Santo da Serra.
