Victory for Bessa and Lencart

Pedro Lencart and Leonor Bessa won their first titles this year at the second Circuito Allianz tournament, organized by the FPG – Portuguese Golf Federation at the Penha Longa Hotel & Golf Resort, in Sintra. The twice national sub -18 champion and the national amateur champion, both playing for Club de Golf de Miramar, in Vila Nova de Gaia, are used to being victorious. Leonor Bessa won three of the six Circuito Allianz tournaments in 2016, and Pedro Lencart won the third trophy in his career on this circuit, after the ones attained in 2016 at Montebelo and in 2015 at the Clube de Campo da Aroeira (Almada). Their victories at Penha Longa were quite different, though. Leonor Bessa dominated the second event of the most important FPG circuit, as she was already in the lead after 18 holes, two strokes ahead of Joana Mota, from Clube de Golfe de Vilamoura, the winner of the first 2017 Circuito Allianz tournament, in January, at the Oceanico Faldo Golf Course. At the end her advantage had grown to nine strokes, over Sara Gouveia, of the Clube Laranjas, and eleven over Joana Mota. The end of the tournament was absolutely great, with Bessa playing the last eight holes in three strokes under par, for an aggregate of 155 strokes, 11 over par, after rounds of 79 and 76. On the other hand, Pedro Lencart attained one of the best recoveries of his career, if not the best, as at the end of the first round he was six strokes from the leaders, and ended up winning on the second day, after a two hole play off against Nathan Brader, an Englishman residing in the Algarve, a long time member of the Clube de Golfe de Vilamoura. Funnily, they both started their last round in the group in 10th place, they both signed cards of 77 and 72, for an aggregate of 149 (+5). Lencart almost avoided the play off, were it not for a bogey on the last hole. For most of the 69 players this was the first time on the fearsome Atlantico Course at Penha Longa, which in 2010 caused so many difficulties for the stars of the European Tour, during the 54th Portugal Open.

Leonor Bessa e Pedro Lencart venceram os seus primeiros títulos do ano no 2º Torneio do Circuito Allianz que a Federação Portuguesa de Golfe (FPG) organizou no Penha Longa Hotel & Golf Resort, no concelho de Sintra. A bicampeã nacional de sub-18 e o campeão nacional amador, ambos jogadores do Club de Golf de Miramar, de Vila Nova de Gaia, estão habituados a estes triunfos. Leonor Bessa ganhou três dos seis torneios do Circuito Allianz em 2016 e Pedro Lencart apoderou-se do seu terceiro troféu de carreira neste circuito, depois dos alcançados em 2016 em Montebelo e em 2015 no Clube de Campo da Aroeira (Almada). As suas vitórias na Penha Longa foram, contudo, bem distintas. Leonor Bessa dominou o segundo evento do mais importante circuito da FPG, pois já liderava aos 18 buracos, com uma vantagem de 2 pancadas sobre Joana Mota, do Clube de Golfe de Vilamoura, a vencedora do 1º Torneio do Circuito Allianz de 2017, em janeiro, no Oceânico Faldo Golf Course; mas no final do torneio a sua superioridade tinha crescido para 9 pancadas sobre Sara Gouveia, do Clube Laranjas, e menos 11 do que Joana Mota. O seu final de prova foi de elevada qualidade, com os últimos oito buracos a serem jogados em 3 pancadas abaixo do Par, para um agregado de 155 pancadas, 11 acima do Par, após voltas de 79 e 76. Pelo contrário, Pedro Lencart assinou uma das melhores recuperações da sua carreira, senão mesmo a maior, pois no final da primeira jornada estava a 6 pancadas dos líderes, acabando por triunfar no segundo dia, num play -off de dois buracos com Nathan Brader, um inglês com residência oficial no Algarve, que representa há muito o Clube de Golfe de Vilamoura. Curiosamente, iniciaram ambos a última volta no grupo dos 10º classificados, assinaram os dois cartões de 77 e 72, para um agregado de 149 (+5), mas Lencart quase evitou o play-off, não fosse 1 bogey sofrido no último buraco. Para a maioria dos 69 participantes foi a primeira vez que competiram no temível Atlântico Course da Penha Longa, que, em 2010, tantas dificuldades causou às estrelas do European Tour, no 54º Open de Portugal.
