The Portugal Open is to return to the European Tour calendars at the highest level in what concerns the host club for the next three years. The Morgado do Reguengo (between Portimão and Monchique), which was already an excellent course, was improved over the last few months, and is now a high level championship course, longer, and with a fabulous green carpet, manicured in every detail. This is to be the first time that the Portugal Open is to take place on a course designed by European Golf Design, the European Tour architecture office. The course has become 360 metres longer (for a total of 6788 metres), with the construction of twelve new tees, which are to be used for the first time during the Open. From now on it is going to become longer also for the amateurs, because the yellow tees are going to be further away, “thus becoming more balanced in terms of difficulty.” The placing of these new tees was defined by the course director, Jorge Papa, in which he was supported by the European Tour during the inspection visits. The course now has 96 bunkers (they were 104 at the opening, in 2003) and three lakes, which will be in play on five holes. With these slight changes it becomes more competitive, and from all tees there will be a more risky line, if players decide to attack the holes. The Morgado greens are slightly undulating, and are all large, each one of them with about a thousand square metres. O Morgado do Reguengo (entre Portimão e Monchique), que era já um excelente campo, melhorou nos últimos meses e está agora um Championship de alto nível, mais comprido e com um fabuloso tapete verde, cuidado ao pormenor. É a primeira vez que o Open de Portugal vai decorrer num campo desenhado pela European Golf Design, o gabinete de arquitetura do European Tour. Mas agora o campo ficou mais comprido 360 metros (para o total de 6.788 metros) com a construção de 12 novos tees que serão utilizados pela primeira vez no Open. A partir de agora ficará também mais comprido para os amadores pois os tees amarelos vão recuar, “ficando mais equilibrado nas dificuldades”. A localização destes 12 novos tees foi definida pelo diretor do campo, Jorge Papa, que teve a aprovação plena do European Tour, durante as visitas de inspecção. O campo conta com 96 bunkers (eram 104 na abertura, em 2003) e três lagos que estarão em jogo em cinco buracos. Com estas ligeiras alterações fica mais competitivo e de todos os novos tees os jogadores terão uma linha de maior risco, se decidirem “atacar” em direção ao green. The preparation of the course started early in February, with the 24 elements of maintenance very much involved in the work. The new tees were built by ESDAD and the grasses were supplied by Algarelva, from Tomás Melo Gouveia. The European Tour technicians have approved the work being done by the Morgado team. “I have the privilege of heading a luxury team, who is enthused with high levels of professionalism whenever this is necessary, and this has been so since the beginning,” said Jorge Papa, stressing that the Portugal Open will be played at Morgado “thanks to the strong support of the administration, especially Mário Ferreira,” who approved a sizeable investment that includes new machines and buggies. The announcement of the Portugal Open at Morgado on the European Tour calendar is already bearing fruit, and demand is great. In March there were 9500 rounds, with the expectation being for the same number to occur in April. The driving range closed in April, and the whole course will close on May 1st for the final preparation. “We intend to have the course in excellent condition for the Open,” added the director, stressing that the number of reservations by foreigners for the Autumn, starting in September, are reaching record numbers. Jorge Papa has a vast experience in golf. He comes from Quinta do Lago, where he worked during some Portugal Opens, and later moved to João Lagos Sports (six Portugal Open, two Madeira Open and Challenge Tours), was responsible for Quinta do Peru golf and took over the management of Morgado in May 2002. He is also responsible for all of the Herdade Morgado do Reguengo, with 966 hectares, including the Alamos hunting course, as well as forest and agricultural areas.

O anúncio do Open de Portugal para o Morgado nos calendários europeus começou já a dar frutos e a procura é grande. Em Março registou 9.500 voltas com a previsão de igual afluência para Abril. O campo de treino fechou em Abril e o percurso encerra a 1 de Maio para os trabalhos finais de preparação. “Pretendemos ter o campo em condições excelentes para o Open”, acrescentou o diretor, salientando que as reservas do estrangeiro para o Outono, a partir de Setembro, estão a atingir números recorde. Jorge Papa tem uma grande experiência no golfe. Oriundo da escola da Quinta do Lago, onde trabalhou durante alguns dos Opens de Portugal, esteve depois na organização da João Lagos Sports (6 opens de Portugal, 2 da Madeira e do Challenge Tour), foi responsável pelo golfe na Quinta do Peru e assumiu a direção do Morgado em Maio de 2002. É ainda o responsável por toda a Herdade do Morgado do Reguengo, que tem 966 hectares e inclui o campo dos Álamos, couto de caça turística, zona agrícola e florestal.
