JAMIE ABBOTT WINS INVITATION TO THE PORTUGAL OPEN
After the rivalry between Tiago Cruz, Ricardo Santos and Pedro Figueiredo made the first four months of the Algarve Pro Golf Tour (APGT) livelier, the end of the 2016/2017 season is being marked by a duel between Tiago Ctuz and Englishman Jamie Abbott. Abbott won his second title in the three last tournaments, at the 1st Castro Marim Classic, which in March closed the 7th Swing of the APGT, while Cruz finished 3rd, this meaning that the Briton has consolidated his double number one stature, on the APGT ranking and also on the Race for the Portugal Open. With this triumph, the 29 years old Briton who, as a pro, has already won tournaments on the PGA Euro Pro Tour and the Jamega Pro Golf Tour (both British satellite circuits), won the “Race to the Portugal Open”, i.e., he is first in this new scoring. “Jamie will get, as prize for being number one, an invitation to play the Portugal Open at Morgado Golf Resort,” said José Correia, President of the PGA Portugal. The circuit now moves to the West of Portugal, and this is one of the novelties of this season, the exit of the Algarve, due to the interest stated by the Guardian Bom Sucesso and the Royal Obidos in receiving three APGT tournaments in April. Depois da rivalidade entre os portugueses Tiago Cruz, Ricardo Santos e Pedro Figueiredo ter animado os primeiros quatro meses do Algarve Pro Golf Tour (APGT), este final de época 2016/2017 está a ser caracterizado por um duelo entre Tiago Cruz e o inglês Jamie Abbott. Abbott conquistou o seu segundo título nos três últimos torneios, no 1º Castro Marim Classic, que concluiu em março o 7º Swing do APGT, enquanto Cruz terminou no 3º lugar, fazendo com que o inglês tenha consolidado o seu duplo estatuto de nº1, tanto no Ranking do APGT, como, sobretudo, na Corrida para o Open de Portugal. Com este triunfo, o inglês de 29 anos que, como profissional já venceu torneios no PGA EuroPro Tour e no Jamega Pro Golf Tour (ambos circuitos satélites britânicos), venceu a “Race to Open de Portugal”, ou seja, é o primeiro nº1 desta nova classificação. ”O Jamie vai receber como prémio por ser o nº1 um convite para jogar o Open de Portugal @ Morgado Golf Resort”, informou José Correia, presidente da PGA de Portugal. “Ele está de parabéns, porque é o jogador mais regular do circuito e joga este circuito desde o início. The story could have been quite different, as Tiago Cruz (65+71) led the tournament after 18 holes, was seeking an unheard of 4th title in the 2016/2017 APGT, and had he done it he would have returned to number one on the ranking, but the national vice champion ended up sharing sixth place with Hugo Santos (67+69), with 136 (-8). Tomás Silva is still the player with the most top -10 results this APGT season, and did it again, with 138 (70+68), -6, in 10th, tied with two other players.

Uns dias antes, foi a vez de outro português brilhar. João Carlota, no 1º Quinta da Ria Classic, de 10 mil euros em prémios monetários, obteve a sua segunda melhor classificação de sempre e da época de 2016/2017 em torneios do APGT, cotando-se também como o melhor português na prova. O representante do Team Portugal foi 4º classificado, empatado com Jamie Abbott (67+68), totalizando 135 pancadas, 9 abaixo do Par, após voltas de 66 e 69, ficando a 3 de um trio de britânicos que decidiu entre si o título num animado play-off. E foram precisos quatro buracos de morte súbita para que o inglês Will Enefer (66+66) conseguisse derrotar o seu compatriota David Dixon (65+67) e o irlandês Cormac Sharvin (65+67). A história poderia ter sido bem diferente, dado que Tiago Cruz (65+71) liderava o torneio aos 18 buracos, perseguia um inédito 4º título no APGT de 2016/2017 e se o tivesse conseguido teria regressado ao posto de nº1 do Ranking, mas o vice-campeão nacional acabou por partilhar o 6º lugar com Hugo Santos (67+69), com 136 (-8).
