GOLF IN SAL ISLAND
The Island of Sal, a tourist destination in great development in Cabo Verde, and already very much sought after by Europeans, is going to have a golf course next to the main hotels in the city of Santa Maria, to the south. “Golf is important in any reference destination. A country that wants to bet on quality tourism must have golf,” ,stated Julio Lopes, President of the local council, during the presentation on golf in Sal. “In Sal we have all the conditions for activities in a natural environment. Sal is probably one of the places on earth with more sun and natural attractions, to which we would add other elements to add value to our tourism. We have to adapt golf to the special characteristics of our island. It won’t be all grass, but also dry terrain,” added the councilman, stressing that ”on his part, there’s total openness for the establishment of quality tourism.” Golf was officially presented to the population and to the managers of the hotels during a three day event on a training course and the basic course drawn amongst the dunes, with six holes and 1138 metres (3 par 4s and 3 par 3s). All those participating (32) in the opening tournament went twice around the course (12 holes), with 14 birdies being registered. The presentation involved youth from two schools in Santa Maria and various local entities, but also many foreigners residing or spending holidays on the island, including many Portuguese and Italians. Amongst the “pupils” of professional Tony Barnabé, who coordinated the whole presentation, were the local Mayor and the President of the Região de Turismo do Algarve, Desidério Silva, the President of the Cabo verde Chamber of Tourism, Gualberto do Rosário, and various councilmen.

Um país que quer apostar num turismo de qualidade o golfe deve estar presente”, sublinhou Júlio Lopes, presidente da Câmara local, durante a apresentação do golfe no Sal. “No Sal temos todas as condições para atividades num ambiente natural. Talvez o Sal seja dos poucos países do mundo com mais sol e atrativos naturais, a que acrescentamos outros elementos para valorizar o nosso turismo. Temos de adaptar o golfe às circunstâncias da nossa ilha. Não será só em relva mas também no terreno seco”, acrescentou o autarca, sublinhando que “da nossa parte a abertura é total para se construir um turismo de qualidade”. O golfe foi oficialmente apresentado à população e aos responsáveis dos hotéis no decorrer de um evento de três dias num campo de treino e no campo rústico delineado entre as dunas, com seis buracos e 1.138 metros (3 ‘par 4’ e 3 ‘par 3’). Todos os 32 participantes no torneio inaugural fizeram duas voltas (12 buracos) e foram registados 14 ‘birdies’. Esta apresentação envolveu jovens de duas escolas de Santa Maria e diversas entidades locais, incluindo muitos estrangeiros residentes ou em férias na Ilha do Sal, entre eles numerosos portugueses e italianos. Despite not yet having a course, Sal island does have some golf enthusiasts, mainly resident foreigners. And one of the best players in Cabo Verde is Humberto Bento, born in São Vicente, but a resident and a taxi driver on Sal, with a handicap of one, and four birdies in the opening tournament. “We hope that these days of golf are the kickoff for golf on Sal, and that this initiative comes to fruition,” said Emidio Simoes, of Tourism Cabo Verde, and one of the promoters behind the event. Meanwhile Golf Portugal & Island has learned that there are ongoing contacts to find sponsors for the construction of the course, that may have only nine holes to start, despite there being space for 18 holes and a clubhouse. The course will have some unique conditions, being fully designed on sand, between small dunes. Due to water scarcity, the tees may be made with artificial grass, while only the greens have natural grass.
The course is to be built next to the main hotels: Melia, Riu, Hilton, Belorizonte and Salinas Sea. The island is a paradise for tourism, and offers various nautical activities, from spear-fishing to windsurfing, kite-surfing, snorkelling, to walks through the islands, only some 30 kilometres long, with gorgeous beaches and salt flats. Next to Santa Maria are the hotels, all of them with all inclusive systems, which will have a capacity of 21 thousnad beds this summer, among them; the Melia, the Riu, the Hilton (with casino), and the Portuguese Salinas Sea (five stars) and Belorizonte (four stars), each with a number of swimming pools and a bar/restaurant on an almost exclusive beach.

Vicente mas residente e condutor de táxi no Sal, que tem handicap um e fez quatro ‘birdies’ no torneio inaugural. “Desejamos que estes dias de golfe sejam o pontapé de saída para a concretização do golfe na Ilha do Sal e que esta iniciativa se concretize”, disse Emídio Simões, do Turismo de Cabo Verde e grande dinamizador do evento. Entretanto a Golfe Portugal & Islands apurou que estão a decorrer contactos para encontrar patrocinadores para a construção do campo, que poderá ter apenas 9 buracos na fase inicial, embora o espaço esteja apto para 18 buracos e instalações para o clube de golfe.
Este campo terá condições únicas, sendo todo desenhado na areia, entre as pequenas dunas. Devido à escassez de água, poderá ter os tees em relva artificial e os greens em relva natural. O campo ficará junto aos principais hotéis, Mélia, Riu, Hilton, Belorizonte e Salinas Sea. A ilha é um paraíso para o turismo e oferece várias atividades náuticas, desde pesca submarina a windsurf, kite-surf, mergulho até passeios pela ilha que tem uma extensão de apenas 30 quilómetros onde se destacam as lindas praias e as salinas. Junto a Santa Maria estão os hotéis, todos com “tudo incluído” que este ano ficarão com uma capacidade superior a 21 mil camas, entre eles o Mélia, Riu, Hilton (com casino) e os portugueses Salinas Sea (5 estrelas) e Belorizonte (4 estrelas), cada um com várias piscinas e bar/restaurante na praia quase exclusiva.
