PEDRO FIGUEIREDO WINS HIS 5TH TITLE IN SIX MONTHS

Pedro Figueiredo (rounds of 70, 68 and 71) was playing consistently, and in three roundsonly had three bogies, while achieving 12 birdies, but the excitement of a possible victory may have led him into a mistake and an almost fatal double-bogey. Fortunately for the Quinta do Peru Golf & Country Club professional, Jamie Abbott (68+72+69) had recorded a bogey on the 18th hole, after an eagle on the 17th. With the two players tied at 209 strokes, 7 under par, it became necessary to resort to sudden death, and the Navigator player easily recovered from the psychological effects of the rough 54th hole. O campeão nacional de 2013 e jogador do Sport Lisboa e Benfica poderia ter sofrido menos e conseguido a vitória mais cedo, mas 1 duplo-bogey no 54º e último buraco do torneio forçou-o a discutir um “play-off” com o inglês Jamie Abbott, que se tinha cotado como o melhor jogador do Algarve Pro Golf Tour de 2016/2017, tendo mesmo garantido um convite para o Open de Portugal antes do circuito mudar de nome e rumar a Óbidos. Pedro Figueiredo (voltas de 70, 68 e 71) estava a mostrar-se consistente no seu jogo e em três voltas tinha perdido apenas 3 pancadas, face a 12 birdies, mas talvez a vertigem da vitória o tenha levado ao erro e àquele duplo-bogey final que por pouco não lhe era fatídico. Felizmente para o profissional do Quinta do Peru Golf & Country Club Jamie Abbott (68+72+69) também tinha feito 1 bogey no 18, depois de 1 eagle no 17. Com os dois jogadores empatados com 209 pancadas, 7 abaixo do Par, foi necessário ir à “morte-súbita” e o jogador da Navigator recuperou facilmente em termos psicológicos daquele rude golfe. Parece ter sido já noutra vida, mas Pedro Figueiredo não tinha ganho qualquer torneio entre o Campeonato Nacional de 2013 (em agosto) e o Hilti / Mota Engil PGA Open, do PGA Portugal Tour em novembro do ano passado.

It is, in fact, impressive that, at the end of another season of the Portugal Pro Golf Tour, the Tour it is still dominated by Portuguese players, with 12 titles won in 25 tournaments, an organization of PGA Portugal and British Jamega Pro Golf Tour. Nonetheless, and unlike last year, this time it wasn’t a Portuguese player to lead the ranking, and there are no doubts that Jamie Abbott was the most consistent player. The invitation for the Portugal Open atQuinta do Morgado, which was on the table for the three Obidos tournaments went abroad, despite the fact that all the titles went to Portuguese players: Tiago Rodrigues, Ricardo Santos and Pedro Figueiredo. Já este ano, mas ainda referente à época de 2016/2017, impôs-se no 1º Morgado Classic do Algarve Pro Golf Tour, mostrando à PGA de Portugal e à FPG que pode jogar bem no percurso que irá acolher em maio o Open de Portugal; e agora foi o melhor na Final do rebatizado Portugal Pro Golf Tour! Ou seja, depois de um período de seca de mais de três anos, colecionou cinco títulos em seis meses, sendo que dois desses cinco torneios ganhos foram em finais de circuitos muito competitivos. Por outro lado, não podemos esquecer que é o atual nº1 da Ordem de Mérito do Pro Golf Tour, o circuito profissional germânico que funciona como a mais conceituada 3ª divisão europeia, onde, em 8 torneios disputados conseguiu três 2º lugares e mais três top-10! É certo que tanto Tiago Cruz como Ricardo Santos também venceram três vezes neste Algarve Pro Golf Tour / Portugal Pro Golf Tour, mas nenhum português venceu tantos torneios como Pedro Figueiredo neste último meio ano. É, de facto, impressionante que, encerrada mais uma época do Portugal Pro Golf Tour, os portugueses continuem a dominar, com 12 títulos conquistados em 25 torneios organizados pela PGA de Portugal e pelo britânico Jamega Pro Golf Tour. No entanto, ao contrário do ano passado, desta feita, nenhum golfista nacional terminou na primeira posição do ranking e não há dúvida que Jamie Abbott foi o mais regular. Mesmo o convite para o Open de Portugal @ Morgado Golf Resort que estava em jogo nos três torneios de Óbidos acabou por não ficar em casa, apesar de todos os títulos terem ido para portugueses: Tiago Rodrigues, Ricardo Santos e Pedro Figueiredo. Acabou por ser o inglês Craig Farrelly a ficar com esse convite, graças à sua regularidade: 5º (-3) neste torneio, 15º (-2) em Royal Óbidos e 3º (-6) no 1º Guardian Bom Sucesso Classic.
