Champion quits after 50 years

José de Sousa e Melo, one of the best amateurs ever in Portugal, played his last National Absolute Championship in April, 51 years after his first victory in the main tournament of the national golf calendar. “The courses are longer, and for me the distance is increasingly shorter. If the tournament was played in courses like the Estoril one, then I’d be there,” said Sousa e Melo to GOLFE. At the 84th National Absolute Championship, played at the Santo Estevão course, he was 42nd, amongst 93 players, finishing 35 shots from the winner. Sousa e Melo has nine victories in the tournament, and various second places. His debut was at 14 years of age, and he lost in the final against the Visconde de Pereira Machado (another ikon of national golf), on the last hole (it was played as match play, then). Sousa e Melo, 65 years old and National Senior Champion, has an extraordinary gallery of trophies obtained in Portugal (where he won every singles’ competition), and abroad, from Morocco to Luxemburg, Belgium, Brazil, Sweden, etc. One of the best amateurs ever in Portugal, is in his fourth mandate as President of the Clube de Golfe do Estoril, “and I’ll stay there for as long as the members want me,” he said. José de Sousa e Melo, um dos melhores amadores de sempre em Portugal, disputou em Abril o seu último Campeonato Nacional Absoluto, 51 anos depois da primeira vitória no principal torneio do calendário do golfe nacional. “Os campos são mais longos e para mim a distância é cada vez menor. Se o torneio fosse em campos como o Estoril, então estava lá”, disse Sousa e Melo à Golfe. No 84º Campeonato Nacional Absoluto, disputado no campo de Santo Estevão, terminou em 42º lugar, entre 93 concorrentes, ficando a 35 shots do vencedor. Sousa e Melo tem nove vitórias no torneio e vários segundos lugares. A sua estreia foi aos 14 anos e perdeu na final com o Visconde de Pereira Machado (outro histórico do golfe nacional), no último buraco (era então em match-play). Sousa e Melo, com 65 anos e campeão nacional Sénior, tem uma extraordinária galeria de troféus obtidos em Portugal (onde venceu todas as competições individuais) e no estrangeiro, desde Marrocos ao Luxemburgo, Bélgica, Brasil, Suécia, etc.. Um dos melhores amadores de sempre em Portugal, está no quarto mandato como presidente do Clube de Golfe do Estoril “e aqui ficarei enquanto os sócios quiserem”.
