Paulo Nunes & João Pedro Freitas were the best
The “Best of the Best” Laboratório Brum e Freitas Lda, one of the most cherished tournaments of the Clube de Golfed a Ilha Terceira, gathered – as usual – a large number of players. The tournament, with very special characteristics, has two competitive stages. The first takes place as a normal tournament. Then, there’s lunch, in the excellent club facilities, with the prize awarding. Then, there’s the second 5 hole competition to determine the Best of the Best gross and net, with only the first five (gross and net), divided into two groups, and always accompanied by a wide audience of the first stage players. Jorge Soares (Gross) and Paulo Quadros (Net) were the best during the first stage, while the decisive five holes were won by Paulo Nunes and João Pedro Freitas. In a very balanced competition, the gross competition was decided on the 18th hole. At the beginning of the last hole, Paulo Nunes and Pedro Xavier were in the lead, with one stroke underpar, and Ricardo Garcia and Paulo Barcelos were at even par. The 18th, a par -3, did its damage, as usual. Only Jorge Soares hit the green, but Paulo Nunes attained the par, becoming champion. The net result was also decided on the green of the 18th hole. Peulo Quadros was leading by two strokes, but a shank from the tee placed his ball in the bushes, and Quadros didn’t manage any better that a double bogey. An opportunity which Jorge Barcelos and João Pedro Freitas took advantage of, equalling the leader, and forcing a play off, won by the latter. O “Melhor dos Melhores” Laboratório Brum e Freitas, Lda., uma das provas mais acarinhadas do Clube de Golfe da Ilha Terceira, contou como habitualmente com um elevado número de jogadores: 92. Esta prova tem duas fases competitivas. A primeira decorre como um torneio normal. Segue-se o habitual almoço, nas excelentes instalações do clube, com a distribuição dos prémios. Realiza-se então uma segunda competição de 5 buracos para apurar o Melhor dos Melhores gross e net, onde participam somente os primeiros 5 classificados (gross e net), divididos em 2 grupos. Jorge Soares (Gross) e Paulo Quadros (Net) foram os vencedores da primeira fase, enquanto nos cinco buracos decisivos Paulo Nunes e João Pedro Freitas superiorizaram. À entrada do último buraco, Paulo Nunes e Pedro Xavier estavam na liderança Gross com uma pancada abaixo do par e Ricardo Garcia e Paulo Barcelos iguais ao par do campo. O 18, par 3, fez estragos como habitualmente. Só Jorge Soares acertou no green , mas só Paulo Nunes fazia o par, sagrando-se assim campeão. Em Net, foi também no green do 18 que tudo se decidiu. Paulo Quadros liderava com duas pancadas de avanço, mas um ‘shank’ à saída do tee colocou a bola nos arbustos e Quadros não pôde fazer melhor de que um duplo. Oportunidade aproveitada por Jorge Barcelos e João Pedro Freitas igualarem o comandante, forçando assim um play-off, conquistado por este último.
