SENIOR GOLF: SUCCESS

In a country where little is done to allow the youth to participate in golf, it’s the elders, the seniors, that are playing it. Perhaps seeking a better standard of life in an environment that already existed, but that they didn’t know when they were young. Portuguese youth (many hundreds) have a few offerings, during their adolescence: golf in the schools, almost throughout the country, taught by physical education teachers, with some knowledge of golf or, at the next step, Project Drive, also throughout the country. But after these programmes, what comes next for these youth? Unless they enrol in a club, or they have someone who “pushes” them, golf is over. While the courses (who are commercial ventures and require money to survive) don’t help those who aren’t (or can’t be) members, we will not evolve. More examples, like the Oporto GC, are needed, where kids pay 50 euro per year to have weekly lessons, course access, and other benefits. The opposite happens with the elder, already retired or almost. Advised, many seek golf as a therapy or an occupation. Senior golf is growing throughout the country, and there are more and more candidates to play golf. For these, the courses hold their arms wide open. And it is in the north that seniors will have more activity, both in terms of clubs and the national association. Highlight on Oporto, Miramar, Viseu GC, and Montebelo with an extraordinary calendar of activities . In the Lisbon region, it is the Senior’s Association that promotes strong activity (18 holes tournaments, pitch & putt and nine holes), and Aroeira, with a dynamic calendar for its eighty members. In the Algarve Portuguese seniors regularly play amongst themselves during the week, on various courses, but it’s the foreign residents, from one end of the province to the other, that are more active. The National Association of Seniorshas just been started there, the goal being to integrate them all. And the results are quite stimulating. And interestingly, it’s the foreign seniors that are most enthusiastic in the Algarve.

Num país onde pouco se faz para que os jovens possam ter continuidade no golfe, são os mais velhos, os SENIORES, que estão a aderir a esta modalidade. Talvez procurando agora uma melhor qualidade de vida num ambiente que já existia, mas que desconheciam, quando eram jovens. Os jovens portugueses (largas centenas) terão algumas ofertas, durante a adolescência: golfe nas escolas, em quase todo o País, com “aulas” dos professores de educação física, já com conhecimentos de golfe, ou no patamar seguinte, o Projeto Drive, também a nível nacional. Mas depois de se destacarem nestes projetos, qual é a sequência para esses jovens? Se não se inscreverem num clube ou tiverem alguém que “puxe” por eles, acaba o golfe. Enquanto os campos (que são comerciais e precisam de dinheiro para sobreviver) não ajudarem aqueles que não são (ou não podem) ser sócios, não vamos evoluir. Precisam-se de exemplos como o Oporto GC, onde os miúdos pagam 50 euros por ano para terem aulas semanais, acesso ao campo e outras regalias. O inverso são os mais velhos, já reformados ou a caminho. Aconselhados, muitos procuram o golfe como terapia ou ocupação. O golfe Senior está a crescer em todo o País e são cada vez mais os candidatos à prática do golfe. Para estes, os campos estão de braços abertos. Eé a norte que os Seniores terão mais atividade, tanto ao nível de clubes como da Associação Nacional. Destaque para o Oporto GC, Miramar e o CG Viseu, este com uma extraordinária atividade e calendário de provas no Montebelo. Na região de Lisboa é a Associação de Seniores que mantém uma forte atividade (torneios de 18 buracos, de pitch&putt e de 9 buracos) e ainda a Aroeira com um dinâmico calendário para os seus cerca de 80 associados. No Algarve os Seniores portugueses jogam regularmente entre si durante a semana, em vários campos, mas são os estrangeiros residentes, do Barlavento ao Sotavento, que estão mais ativos. Foi agora criada na região a delegação da Associação Nacional de Seniores visando integrar todos. E os resultados estão a ser muito animadores. Curiosamente são os Seniores estrangeiros residentes os mais entusiastas no Algarve
