First victory for Tiago Rodrigues

Algarve Pro Golf Tour

Tiago Rodrigues, in April, won the most important title in his career, the first since he turned professional, about eight months ago. The Oporto Golf Club member, just 25 years old, won the 1st Guardian Bom Sucesso Classic, an 18 thousand euro prize money tournament played at that resort in Óbidos. The 1st Guardian Bom Sucesso Golf is the first of three tournaments in the 8th swing of the Algarve Pro Golf Tour (APGT), now re-branded the Portugal Pro Golf Tour (PPGT), because it spread from the south all the way to the west. The greatest figure at the tournament was Scotsman Paul Lawrie, who in 1999 won the British Open. We could be tempted to say that, at 48, Paul Lawrie has long lost his best golf, because his eighth and last European Tour dates back to 2012, but this would have been an inexcusable mistake. It was after all last October that the Scotsman shone in Vilamoura, and almost won the tenth Portugal Masters, finishing fifth. Britton David Dixon won his last title on the European Tour in 2008, but last season he was seventh in the Hassan 2nd Trophy, a tournament richer that the Portugal Masters (2500 euro) that is played this week with Ricardo Melo Gouveia and Filipe Lima participating. Another star on these two days was Spain’s Carlos del Moral, the winner of two Challenge Tour tournaments and, especially, the 2013 Qualifying School. And in 2005 del Moral was fourth at the BMW International Open, on the European Tour. Finally, one can’t discard Ricardo Santos, one of only four Portuguese players to hold a European Tour trophy in their hands, from his victory at the Madeira Islands BPI Open in 2012. The youngest of the Santos brother is also the present twice national champion. Tiago Rodrigues beat them all, with an almost immaculate exhibition, totalling 135 strokes, 9 under par, with scores of 64 and 71, leaving the second best two strokes behind him.

Oportuguês Tiago Rodrigues conquistou em abril o título mais importante da sua carreira e o primeiro desde que passou a profissional há cerca de oito meses. O jogador do Oporto Golf Club, de apenas 25 anos, venceu o 1º Guardian Bom Sucesso Classic, um torneio de 10 mil euros em prémios monetários, que se disputou naquele “resort” situado no concelho de Óbidos. O 1º Guardian Bom Sucesso Golf foi o primeiro de três torneios do 8º “Swing” do Algarve Pro Golf Tour (APGT), agora rebatizado de Portugal Pro Golf Tour (PPGT), exatamente por ter-se expandido do sul do país para a zona Oeste. Claro que a grande figura do torneio foi o escocês Paul Lawrie, que em 1999 venceu o British Open. Poderíamos ser tentados a dizer que, aos 48 anos, Paul Lawrie deixou há muito o seu melhor golfe, até porque o seu 8º e último título no European Tour já data de 2012, mas seria um erro indesculpável. Afinal, em outubro, o escocês deu espetáculo em Vilamoura e quase ganhava o 10º Portugal Masters, terminando no 5º lugar. Também o inglês David Dixon venceu o seu único título no European Tour em 2008, mas, atenção, na época passada foi 7º no Troféu Hassan II, um torneio mais rico do que o Portugal Masters (2.500 euros), que se joga esta semana com as presenças de Ricardo Melo Gouveia e Filipe Lima. Outra das estrelas destes dois dias em Óbidos foi o espanhol Carlos del Moral, campeão de dois torneios do Challenge Tour e, sobretudo, da Final da Escola de Qualificação em 2013. E em 2015 del Moral foi 4º no BMW International Open do European Tour. Finalmente, não podemos esquecer-nos de Ricardo Santos, um dos quatro únicos jogadores portugueses a terem um troféu do European Tour na sua coleção, quando venceu o Madeira Islands Open BPI em 2012. O mais novo dos irmãos Santos é ainda o atual duplo campeão nacional. Tiago Rodrigues desafiou e derrotou esta brilhante concorrência com uma exibição quase imaculada, totalizando 135 pancadas, 9 abaixo do Par, ao agregar “scores” de 64 e 71, deixando o segundo classificado, Ricardo Santos, a duas pancadas.
