Tomás Melo Gouveia and Leonor Bessa won, for the first time in their careers, the Peugeot National Absolute Championship, the 84th edition of which was organized by the Portuguese Golf Federation (PGF) at Santo Estevão Golfe, in Benavente, where Leonor Medeiros and Francisco Ataíde won second categories. It was a special moment for both, as they were part of the group of favourites from the start, they managed the pressure, and especially because it allowed them to complete what we could call the career Grand Slam of Portuguese Amateur Golf. They had both, in previous years, won the Solverde National Clubs’ Championship and the BPI/PGF Cup, but they were missing the most coveted of all titles, the one of national amateur champion. Leonor Bessa was part of the Clube de Golfe de Miramar team that won the 2015 and 2016 Clubs’ Championships, and she won the 2015 BPI/PGF Cup in 2015. This time, at the Peugeot National, she led from day one, totalling 297 strokes, 5 over par, turning in cards of 73, 72, 76 and 76. Tomás Melo Gouveia was part of the Clube de Golfe de Vilamoura team that became Clubs’ Champion in 2014, he conquered the 2016 BPI/PGF Cup, and now won the Peugeot National with 284 strokes, 8 under par, after rounds of 74, 66, 74 and 70. He was in the lead on the second day due to the best round of the tournament, 66 (-7).

Leonor Bessa e Tomás Melo Gouveia conquistaram pela primeira vez nas suas carreiras o Campeonato Nacional Absoluto Peugeot, cuja 84ª edição foi organizada pela Federação Portuguesa de Golfe (FPG) no Santo Estêvão Golfe, no concelho de Benavente, onde Leonor Medeiros e Francisco Ataíde se sagraram campeões nacionais de Segundas Categorias. Foi um momento especial para ambos, na medida em que faziam parte do lote de favoritos à partida, souberam lidar com essa pressão e, sobretudo, porque permitiu-lhes completar o que poderemos chamar de Grand Slam de carreira no golfe amador português. Ambos já tinham ganho em anos anteriores o Campeonato Nacional de Clubes Solverde e a Taça da FPG/BPI, mas faltavalhes o título mais apetecido de todos, o de campeão nacional amador. Leonor Bessa integrou a equipa campeã de clubes do Club de Golf de Miramar em 2015 e 2016 e venceu a Taça FPG/BPI em 2015. Desta feita, no Nacional Peugeot, liderou desde o primeiro dia e totalizou 297 pancadas, 5 acima do Par, apresentando cartões de 73, 72, 76 e 76. These were uncontested victories. Leonor Bessa, 18 years old – is still national sub -18 champion, left the second placed Sara Gouveia (75+79+75+81), 17 years old, 13 strokes away. At the end of the first day Tomás Melo Gouveia, 22 years old, was four strokes behind the leader of the first round, Tomás Bessa; but after that he kept adding. On the second round he was already leading by three over Bessa; on the third day he held a two strokes advantage, over both Bessa and Vasco Alves; and at the end of the tournament he increased his advantage over Alves, 17 years old, to six shots. “Last year I was unable to play in this tournament, and of course this year I wanted to win it, and I managed to do it. I played good golf, and I was consistent, even though I played much worse on the last two days, and that’s the only reason I didn’t end up under par, but I leave here confident. It is with a lot of pride and a lot of honour that I am National Champion,” said Leonor Bessa to RTP2. The Peugeot National Absolute Championship also determines the National Second Categories Champions (handicaps equal or greater than 4,5), and the winners were Leonor Medeiros, national sub -14 champion, and Francisco Ataide, 22 years old, both from the Quinta do Peru Golf & Country Club. Tomás Melo Gouveia, de 22 anos, no final do primeiro dia estava 4 pancadas atrás do líder da primeira volta, Tomás Bessa; mas depois disso foi-se destacando: na segunda volta já comandava por 3 pancadas sobre Bessa; na terceira ronda segurou a liderança por 2 pancadas em relação a Bessa e Vasco Alves; e no final do torneio dilatou a sua superioridade sobre Alves, de 17 anos, para 6 “shots”. “No ano passado não pude jogar este torneio, é claro que este ano vinha com o objetivo de ganhá-lo e consegui concretizá-lo. Joguei bom golfe e fui consistente, embora nos dois últimos dias tenha jogado pior e só por isso não fiquei abaixo do Par, mas saio daqui confiante. É com muito orgulho e muita honra que sou campeã nacional”, disse, por seu turno Leonor Bessa, aos microfones da RTP2. O Campeonato Nacional Absoluto Peugeot serve também para designar os campeões nacionais de Segundas Categorias (handicaps iguais ou superiores a 4,5) e os vencedores foram Leonor Medeiros, a campeã nacional de sub-14, e Francisco Ataíde, de 22 anos, ambos do Quinta do Peru Golf & Country Club.
