The Oporto Golf Club is 127 years old. It was the third club to appear in Continental Europe and the first on the Iberian Peninsula. It has one honorable world record: it has the oldest trophy being played uninterruptedly annually, the Skeffington Cup, created in 1891. There are older trophies in Britain, but they were interrupted for the two world wars. The club was created in 1890 by British traders living in Porto. It’s first name was Oporto Niblicks (name of the club then used most on the nine hole sand course, designated St Skeffs Links). In 1990 a new nine hole course was built, further south, as well as the first club house, and the name changed to Oporto Golf Club. It wasn’t until 1921 that the first Portuguese was admitted as a member, Fernando Nicolau de Almeida. And women weren’t admitted as club members until 1932. After various changes, due to visits by British architects Mackenzie Ross and Frank Pennink, the present design was setup in 1978, keeping the links’ character and playing to a par of 71. Through the last several years, conditions of the course have been consistently improved, in terms of the fairways, roughs and especially the greens, which are presently among the best in Portugal. The first Portuguese board was elected in 1965 (Sebastião Soares), and since then the club has been exclusively run by Portuguese. In the last several years the efforts of the board have gone not only into improving the course, but also to attract more members, especially youngsters. The Oporto GC has been, for the last few years, one of the most prestigious national golf academies, coordinated by professional Eduardo Maganinho. He currently has about sixty pupils, ages 6 to 18, and Eduardo counts on the assistance of his brother, José, who is re-

Conta com um honroso recorde mundial: tem o troféu mais antigo em disputa anual ininterrupta, a Taça Skeffington, criada em 1891. Há troféus mais antigos na Grã-Bretanha mas durante as duas grandes guerras tiveram interrupções. O clube foi fundado em 1890 por comerciantes ingleses radicados no Porto. A primeira designação foi Oporto Niblicks (nome do taco então mais utilizado no campo de 9 buracos, em areia, designado de St. Skeff Links). Em 1990 foi construído um novo campo de 9 buracos, mais a sul, construída também a primeira casa do clube e o nome passou então para Oporto Golf Club. Só em 1921 foi admitido o primeiro português como sócio, Fernando Nicolau de Almeida. E só em 1932 as mulheres foram admitidas como membros do clube. O primeiro campo de 18 buracos em Portugal foi inaugurado a 18 de Março de 1934, com a característica de links e “par 73”. Após várias alterações na sequência das visitas dos arquitetos britânicos Mackenzie Ross e Frank Pennink foi em 1978 que surgiu o atual desenho, mantendo-se as característica de links e com “par 71”. Ao longo dos últimos anos as condições do campo registaram consecutivos melhoramentos nos fairways, rough e sobretudo nos greens, que serão atualmente dos melhores do País. A primeira direção portuguesa foi eleita em 1965 (Sebastião Soares) e desde então o clube tem sido dirigido apenas pelos portugueses. E nos últimos anos o esforço dos dirigentes tem sido não apenas em melhorar as condições do campo mas também de cativar mais associados, sobretudo jovens. O Oporto GC é desde há vários anos uma das mais conceituadas escolas do golfe nacional, coordenada pelo profissional Eduardo Maganinho. Atualmente conta com cerca de 60 alunos com ida-

The greatest pride of these youngsters is to represent the club in any competition.
