Britton Matt Wallace attained in May his first European Tour title at the 55th Portugal Open @ Morgado Golf Resort, a tournament with half a million euro prize Money, played in Portimão after a seven years break. Wallace, 27 years old, had already won eight titles as a professional but in minor divisions, namely six last year, while on the Alps Tour, one of the European third divisions. This success took him up into the Challenge Tour, the second division, where he was from the start of the current season, but his success at the Morgado automatically promoted him to the first division, the European Tour, where he already shows as the 111th position on the Race to Dubai, after winning a 83.330 euro prize. Matt Wallace led from the first round, totaling 271 strokes, 21 below the par, with rounds of 63, 66, 73 and 69, beating American Julian Suri (rounds of 67, 68, 74 and 65) by three strokes. Oinglês Matt Wallace conquistou em maio o primeiro título do European Tour no 55º Open de Portugal @Morgado Golf Resort, um torneio de meio milhão de euros em prémios monetários, que se disputou em Portimão, depois de uma ausência de sete anos. Wallace, de 27 anos, já tinha ganho oito títulos como profissional de golfe, mas em divisões menores, designadamente seis no ano passado, quando militava no Alps Tour, uma das terceiras divisões europeias. Esse sucesso levou-o a subir ao Challenge Tour, a segunda divisão, onde estava desde o início da presente temporada, mas o sucesso no Morgado Golf Course promoveu -o automaticamente à primeira divisão, o European Tour, onde já aparece como o 111º classificado na Corrida para o Dubai, depois de embolsar um prémio de 83.330 euros. Matt Wallace liderou desde a primeira volta e totalizou 271 pancadas, 21 abaixo do Par, agregando voltas de 63, 66, 73 e 69, batendo por 3 pancadas o norte-americano Julian Suri, que, por seu lado, somou rondas de 67, 68, 74 e 65. Totalizou 291 pancadas, 1 abaixo do Par, integrando o grupo dos 68º classificados entre 71 jogadores que passaram o cut, ganhando 905 euros.
Pedro Figueiredo was the only Portuguese player to set a new personal record. His best score ever in the Portugal Open was a 71st place in 2008, still as an amateur. This year, already as a pro, he finished the competition in the group of 42nd, with 286 strokes, six below the par, with rounds of 75, 68, 72 and 71. Another Portuguese, João Carlota, was very close to joining the qualifying players for the final two rounds and, just like Figueiredo, he made a remarkable effort just to end one styroke from the cut, with 144 (72+72), on 74th tied. Ricardo Melo Gouveia and Tiago Cruz finished in 106th (tied), with 146 strokes, par of the course. In 127th (+2) was his youngest brother, Tomás Melo Gouveia; in 137th (+3) Tomás Silva; in 142nd (+4), Hugo Santos; in 145th (+5), João Ramos; and in 152nd (+9) Tiago Rodrigues. The Portugal Open @ Morgado Golf Resort was organized by the Grupo Nau Hotels & Resorts, by the FPG and PGA Portugal. It counts for the world ranking, the Race to Dubai (of the European Tour) and the Race to Oman (Challenge Tour), distributing half a million euro in prizes.
Já Pedro Figueiredo foi o único dos 11 portugueses presentes à partida a fixar um novo recorde pessoal. A sua melhor classificação de sempre no Open de Portugal era um 71º lugar em 2008, ainda como amador. Este ano, já como profissional, concluiu a prova no grupo dos 42º classificados, com 286 pancadas, 6 abaixo do Par, juntando voltas de 75, 68, 72 e 71. Outro português, João Carlota, esteve muito perto de juntar-se aos apurados para as duas últimas voltas e, tal como Figueiredo, fez um esforço notável para morrer na praia, terminando a apenas 1 pancada do cut, com 144 (72+72), -2, no 74º posto empatado. Já Ricardo Melo Gouveia e Tiago Cruz terminaram no grupo dos 106º classificados, com 146 pancadas, a Par do campo. Em 127º (+2) ficou o seu irmão mais novo, Tomás Melo Gouveia; em 137º (+3) Tomás Silva; em 142º (+4) Hugo Santos; em 145º (+5) João Ramos; e em 152º (+9) Tiago Rodrigues.
