Madeira Golf Trophy
It is the second edition of a tournament that has left all participants delighted and – why not say it – left those who missed a place in the draw slightly… jealous. The 2017 Madeira Golf Trophy gathers 120 players in June at the championship course at the Santo da Serra Golf Club (CGSS). The tournament, played to stableford rules, with shotgun starts, gathers at one of the best courses in Portugal, opinion leaders and well known political and entrepreneurial personalities of various countries including, of course, Portugal, but also Spain, France and Germany. With a strong social component, the Madeira Golf Trophy still gets the backing of the presidency of the Madeira local government, with Miguel Albuquerque, its president, receiving players and their companions at a welcome cocktail party on the eve of the tournament, at Quinta Vigia, the seat of the island’s government. “It’s a project that’s taking its first steps, and that this year has a strong component of mainland Portugal,” explained Ricardo Abreu, director of CGSS, adding that three weeks from the tournament the Madeira Islands trophy had its field basically completed. “It speaks volumes of the tournament’s quality, and is revealing of the excellent image left by the first edition.” The tournament, just like in 2016, goes beyond the limits of Santo da Serra, the course that hosteded the Madeira Islands Open, on the European Tour calendar, for 23 consecutive years. After the practice round, players head to Funchal, where they attend the aforementioned welcome cocktail party.
Éa segunda edição de um torneio que deslumbrou todos os participantes e, porque não dizer, deixou uma pontinha de inveja em quem não conseguiu um lugar no draw. O Madeira Golf Trophy 2017 reúne 120 jogadores em junho no ‘championship course’ do Clube de Golfe do Santo da Serra (CGSS). A prova, disputada em stableford, com saídas em shotgun, agrega num dos melhores campos nacionais, ‘opinion leaders’ e figuras bem conhecidas do meio político e empresarial de vários países incluindo, claro, Portugal, passando por Espanha, França e Alemanha. Com uma componente social bastante forte, o Madeira Golf Trophy continua a receber o apoio da Presidência do Governo Regional da Madeira, com o chefe do executivo madeirense, Miguel Albuquerque, a dar as boas-vindas aos participantes e acompanhantes num ‘welcome cocktail’ que, decorre na véspera do torneio, na Quinta Vigia, residência oficial do Presidente do arquipélago. “É um projeto que está a dar os primeiros passos, e este ano tem uma forte componente Portugal continental”, explicou Ricardo Abreu, director do CGSS, acrescentando que as três semanas do torneio, o Madeira Islands Trophy já tinha o field praticamente completo. “Atesta bem a qualidade do torneio, e revela a excelente imagem que a primeira edição deixou.” A prova, tal como em 2016, extravasa os limites do Santo da Serra, campo que recebeu durante 23 anos consecutivos o Madeira Islands Open, do calendário do European Tour. Após a volta de treino, os jogadores rumam ao Funchal onde serão recebidos no já referido ‘welcome cocktail’ na Quinta Vigia.
On the day of the game, and after the 18 holes, there’s a prize awarding lunch. A ceremony that, due to the large number of players may have to be postponed for the evening, which is when the tournament’s closure takes place, at Belmond Reid’s Palace, one of the best known hotels worldwide. The hotel, that houses a Michelin star restaurant, offers a privileged view over Funchal Bay where a fireworks festival is to take place – fireworks and music -, part of the 2017 Festival do Atlântico. “We want to allow all participants to have a Madeira experience that goes way beyong golf,” said Ricardo Abreu. The Madeira Golf trophy was an almost natural evolution from the Torneio Cidade do Funchal, played for many years on the very same course. A national and international tournament that, like its successor, aimed at being an attraction for Madeira. Last year the trophy, marked by amazing weather, was won by former golf professional Castro Ferreira (gross) and Hérvé Frère, while ladies’ was won by a home player, Ana Isabel Freitas. There’s a well-filled raffle, one of the tournament’s marks, with prizes like I-Phones, travel bags, clubs, stays at various Belmond properties and even a train journey on the exclusive Orient Express. There’ll be plenty of well-known faces, like former finance minister Teixeira dos Santos, Mercedes Pinto Balsemão, Gilda Paredes Alves, Mariana Champalimaud and former football player for Bayern Munich, Juventus, Borussia Dortmund, and German International Stefan Reuter. No dia de jogo, e após terminados os 18 buracos, segue-se um almoço onde está prevista a entrega de prémios. Uma cerimónia que, devido ao elevado número de participantes, poderá ser adiada para a noite, onde no Belmond Reids Palace, um dos mais icónicos hotéis mundiais, vai decorrer o jantar de encerramento do torneio. A unidade hoteleira, que conta desde este ano com um restaurante com uma estrela Michelin, oferece uma vista privilegiada para a baía do Funchal onde, nessa noite, vai decorrer um espetáculo piromusical – fogo-de-artifício e música – integrado no Festival do Atlântico 2017. “Queremos proporcionar a todos os jogadores e acompanhantes uma experiência de Madeira que vá para além do golfe”, adianta Ricardo Abreu. O Madeira Golf Trophy foi uma ‘evolução’ quase natural do Torneio Cidade do Funchal, que, durante anos, disputou-se naquele mesmo campo. Uma prova nacional e internacional, que, tal como a sua sucessora, pretender ser um cartaz turístico da região autónoma. No ano passado, numa prova marcada por um tempo deslumbrante, o ex-profissional de golfe Castro Ferreira (Gross) e Hervé Frère (Net) foram os vencedores, enquanto nas Senhoras a vitória sorriu a uma jogadora da casa, Ana Isabel Freitas. Com uma tômbola bastante recheada, uma das marcas do torneio, em que entraram prémios como Iphones, sacos de Viagem, tacos, estadias nas mais variadas unidades Belmond e mesmo uma viagem no exclusivo comboio Orient -Express. Não faltaram as caras conhecidas, como a do exministro da Finanças, Teixeira dos Santos, Mercedes Pinto Balsemão, Gilda Paredes Alves, Mariana Champalimaud ou a antigo defesa central do Bayern de Munique, Juventus, Borussia Dortmund, o internacional alemão Stefan Reuter.
