GOLF ABREU IN AZORES

It was with the natural beauty of the Island of São Miguel in the background that the second stage of the 4th Golfe Abreu circuit took place, late in May. Divided onto two courses, the Furnas Golf Course and the Campo de Golfe da Batalha, the tournament gathered 32 players. Azorean players, players who took the trip on purpose to play, both Portuguese and foreigners, a heterogeneous group in its make up but homogeneous in its love for golf, in enthusiasm and fair play. In the end, with the results of the two days, the winners were the pair Nelson Correia/Antero Bento (1st place Net, 82 points), Mário Fortuna/Vasco Amaral (2nd place Net, 77) and Paulo Santos/Fernando Amado (1st place Gross, 67). Despite the unstable weather, the constant threat of rain and the wind, the players remained motivated. The first experience on Azores soil took place at the Furnas Golf course. This was the first course to appear in the archipelago, in 1936, built to a design by Scotsman Mackenzie Ross. Initially with nine holes, it was later (early nineties) enlarged to 18 holes, respecting the original style. On the second day of the competition, the challenge was set on a course with high requirements. The Batalha Golf Course challenged the skill and the agility of the players, with the wind presenting the biggest challenge. A difficulty that didn’t stop the successive conquest of greens by the 16 pairs , during the approximately five hours of playing. After the closing lunch at the clubhouse of the Campo de Golfed a Batalha, gathering the players, representatives of the circuit sponsors, of the Turismo dos Açores and the Ponta Delgada municipality, the prizes were awarded to the winners. For the enjoyment of those present, there was also the usual raffle. In 2017, and in accordance with the charitable tradition of the Circuito de Golfe Abreu, ten percent of the fees were transferred to IPO Porto. The third stage of the circuit takes place on June 10th and 11th on the courses Alamos and Morgado, in Portimão.

Foi com a beleza natural da ilha de S. Miguel como pano de fundo que se assinalou a segunda etapa do IV Circuito de Golfe Abreu, no final de maio. Dividida por dois campos, o Furnas Golf Course e o Campo de Golf da Batalha, a prova reuniu 32 participantes. Entre jogadores açorianos, golfistas que viajaram propositadamente do continente e praticantes internacionais, um grupo eclético na sua composição, mas homogéneo no entusiasmo e no fair play. No final, apurada a soma dos resultados dos dois dias, saíram vitoriosas as duplas Nelson Correia e Antero Bento (1º lugar Net, totalizando 82 pontos), Mário Fortuna e Vasco Amaral (2º lugar Net, com 77 pontos), e Paulo Santos e Fernando Amado (1º lugar Gross, somando 67 pontos). Apesar do tempo instável, a constante ameaça de chuva e o vento que se fez sentir, não prejudicou a motivação dos participantes. O Furnas Golf Course ditou o arranque da experiência de jogo em solo açoriano. A título de curiosidade, este foi o primeiro course a nascer no arquipélago em 1936, obra do escocês Mackenzie Ross. Inicialmente desenhado para 9 buracos, sofreu uma ampliação no início dos anos 90, contando agora com 18 buracos em harmonia com o estilo original. No segundo dia da etapa, a 27 de maio, foi retirada a “prova dos 9” num campo de complexidade elevada. O Batalha Golf Club desafiou a perícia e a agilidade dos golfistas, numa jornada em que o vento representou o principal obstáculo. Uma vicissitude que não poupou a conquista sucessiva dos greens por parte dos 16 pares em jogo, ao longo das, sensivelmente, cinco horas de partida. Após o almoço de encerramento na clubhouse do Campo de Golf da Batalha, que reuniu os jogadores, os representantes das marcas parceiras do Circuito, representantes do Turismo dos Açores e do município de Ponta Delgada, procedeu-se à entrega dos prémios aos vencedores. Para gáudio dos presentes, não faltaram também os habituais sorteios da tômbola. Em 2017, e na continuidade do projeto solidário do Circuito de Golfe Abreu, 10% do valor das inscrições revertem a favor do IPO Porto. A terceira etapa do Circuito decorre de 10 a 11 de junho, nos campos de golfe de Álamos e Morgado, em Portimão.
