Madeira Beyond Golf
There’s more to see and feel in Madeira than golf. Lots more. The archipelago thatr has been repeatedly chosen as the best Island Holiday Destination in the world by World Travel Awards, a sort of Oscar for tourism, deserves a sedate tour. Therefore, in the breaks off golf, get to know the islands better. This is where Europeans built their first city outside Europe, some five hundred years ago: Funchal. But let’s – for now – forget the capital of this autonomous Portuguese region, and let’s concentrate on the North coast, where one can find the origins of Madeira. The volcanic caves complex, in São Vicente, is a “dive” into the island, through a visit to the local caves that transport you to the volcanic origin of the archipelago. The trip is made through a visit the volcanic caves and seeing two films in the multimedia centre, where you will understand how a volcano created, in mid-Atlantic, one of the oldest tourism destinations in the world. Still in São Vicente, let yourself lose in the luxuriant green of laurisilva, the humid subtropical forest that was named a world heritage site by UNESCO. The vegetation is to be found throughout the island, but it is in the North coast that it “breathes” best. Twenty million years old, laurisilva goes back to the tertiary period. In that period, this forest covered the whole of the Mediterranean basin, the south of Europe and North Africa, but climatic changes pushed it ti insular regions, like Madeira, the Azores, Canaries and Cabo Verde. Há mais na Madeira para ver e sentir do que golfe. Há muito mais. Um arquipélago que tem sido sucessivamente eleito como Melhor Destino Insular de Férias pelo ‘World Travel Awards’, uma espécie de Oscar do turismo, merece uma visita demorada. Por isso, nos intervalos do golfe, conheça melhor as ilhas onde, há 500 anos, os europeus edificaram a primeira cidade fora da Europa: o Funchal. Mas, esqueçamos por agora a capital desta região que goza de autonomia política e administrativa dentro de Portugal, e vamos à costa Norte, onde pode encontrar as origens da Madeira. O Centro de Vulcanismo de São Vicente é um mergulho no centro da ilha, através de uma viagem pelas grutas locais que o levam até à formação vulcânica do arquipélago. A viagem faz-se através das grutas vulcânicas e numa visita complementar ao centro, onde virtualmente vai perceber como é que um vulcão, no meio do atlântico, criou um dos mais antigos destinos de férias mundiais. Ainda em São Vicente, deixa-se perder no verde inebriante da Laurissilva, a floresta húmida subtropical que é Património da Humanidade, pela UNESCO. Esta vegetação cobre grande parte da ilha, mas é a Norte que respira melhor. Com 20 milhões de anos, a Laurissilva remonta à Época Terciária. Nessa altura a floresta ocupava toda a área da agora bacia do Mediterrâneo, Sul da Europa e Norte de África, mas as alterações climáticas empurraram a Laurissilva para regiões insulares como a Madeira, Açores, Canárias e Cabo Verde.

The complex is one of the more visited – and photographed – in the island. Made out of volcanic lava, ad leaving space for the natural access of sea water, the pools have constantly clear water. The Centro das Artes das Mudas, designed by architect Paulo David (the project eon the 2012 Alvar Aalto prize), offers one of the most interesting contemporary art collections in Europe, and down there, next to the sea, there’s a yellow sand beach, where you can rest after all this travelling. And all this is just two hours away from many European capitals… What are you waiting for?
E agora que tal um salto até à costa sul, para visitar a Calheta. O concelho, o maior da ilha, é considerado a capital do btt, devido aos trilhos desafiantes que percorrem as serras. Mas, há aqui muito mais para ver e sentir. O Centro das Artes Casa das Mudas, desenhado pelo arquiteto Paulo David, prémio Alvar Aalto 2012, oferece uma das mais interessantes coleções de arte contemporânea da Europa, e lá em baixo, junto ao mar, mora uma praia de areia amarela, onde pode descansar depois de todas estas andanças. Tudo isto a apenas duas horas de avião das principais capitais europeias. Do que está à espera?
