Teixeira Dos Santos
University teacher, the former economy and finance minister and finance secretary of state Fernando Teixeira dos Santos is now a passionate golfer. The CEO of BIC bank admits he doesn’t have as much time to play as he would like, that he resisted starting, but that now, as soon as there is a course in the vicinity, he is happy.
Golf is a recent passion. How did it start?
I started playing golf three and a half years ago. It’s very recent. It happened due to a friend that has played for many years, and that had been challenging to play. At the time I told him I didn’t have the time for it. That I didn’t have the life for it. I was part of the government. Always travelling from Porto to Lisbon, and I felt I didn’t have what it took to take up golf. After that, when I left government in 2011, I still resisted, and I think that it was the end of 2013 that I decided to take some classes. I started in Porto, at the CityGolf, and I play at the Estela. This is my “home course”, but I play in other courses of the Porto area: Miramar, Ponte de Lima, Quinta da Barca, Vale Pisão, Oporto … Professor universitário, ex-secretário de Estado das Finanças e antigo ministro da Economia e das Finanças, Fernando Teixeira dos Santos é, agora, um apaixonado golfista. O CEO do banco Bic admite que não tem o tempo que queria para jogar, que resistiu a começar, mas agora, enquanto houver um campo por perto… está feliz.
O golfe é uma paixão recente. Como começou?
Comecei a jogar golfe há três anos e meio. É uma coisa muito recente. Foi através de um amigo, que joga há muitos anos e durante muito tempo incentivou-me a jogar. Na altura respondia que não tinha tempo. Vida para isso. Estava no governo. Entre o Porto e Lisboa permanentemente e sentia que não tinha condições para me dedicar ao golfe. Depois quando sai do governo em 2011, ainda andei a resistir, e penso que foi em finais de 2013 que eu decidi ter umas aulas. Comecei no Porto, no CityGolf, e jogo na Estela. É o meu ‘home course’, mas jogo noutros campos na zona do Porto: Miramar, Ponte de Lima, Quinta da Barca, Vale Pisão, Oporto…
Was it difficult?
The beginning is always difficult, but I think I adapted easily to the golf logic because I had previously played tennis. So, the idea of swing, of hitting the ball, is something that comes sort of naturally to me, which may have my initial learning easier. It’s a period, while we are playing, in which we get away from our worries. It’s mental health. It’s four hours in which the only thing worrying us is the swing and getting the ball into the hole. That stroke that we – incredibly – missed and the other that we scored like a pro.
Do you still have time to play?
I have been having greater difficulty in playing. I try to play at least twice a week, but I haven’t been managing this. I have now been in Lisbon for a year, and I have gone back to travelling between Porto and Lisbon. The bank is based in Lisbon, and I live in Porto, but I try always to play in the weekend. Now in the summer, with longer days, I may manage to play in a late afternoon, even during the week.
Does anyone else in the family play?
No, no one does. I have until now been unable to entice anyone. I have two grandchildren – ok, three, but one is a baby – that are at an age in which I don’t know whether they are interested in it or not, but one day soon I’ll take them into a golf academy and see what happens. My wife was never very interested in playing. I try not to make her a golf widow, but I am the only one playing in the family.
Do you see golf as an industry?
I see golf as something the country can bet on, because we have all that it takes to develop a touristic offer based on golf. We have a fantastic climate. We usually say that Scotsmen play even when the sun is shining, which means we have this great advantage which is the climate. Almost throughout the year we can play in pleasant conditions, especially in the south, in the Algarve. I think we need to increase our efforts in an offer based on golf. I have the feeling, and I will say this very carefully because I lack all the numbers, but I think that what we call the “operational “economics” of a golf course are still to be fine tuned. I have the feeling that some courses survive with great difficulties, which means there has to be a policy of golf promotion. Mind you, this doesn’t have
Foi difícil?
O início é sempre complicado, mas penso que me ajustei com alguma facilidade à lógica do golfe porque antes joguei ténis. Portanto a ideia do swing, do bater na bola, é algo que não era estranho para mim, o que talvez tenha facilitado a minha aprendizagem inicial. É um período, quando estamos a jogar, que nos abstrairmos das nossas preocupações. É uma higiene mental. São quatro horas em que a única coisa que nos ocupa a cabeça é o swing e meter a bola no buraco. Aquela pancada que parece incrível como é que falhamos, e aquela outra que parecíamos um profissional.
Continua a ter tempo para jogar?
Neste momento tenho tido mais dificuldades em jogar. Procurei jogar pelo menos duas vezes por semana, mas não tenho conseguido. Estou há um ano em Lisboa, e retomei a minha vida entre o Porto e Lisboa. A sede do banco [EuroBic] é em Lisboa e eu resido no Porto, mas procuro sempre jogar ao fim-de-semana. Agora no verão, com os dias mais longos, pode ser num fim de tarde consiga jogar mesmo durante a semana.
Na família mais alguém joga?
Não, ninguém joga. Ainda não consegui aliciar ninguém Tenho dois netos – tenho três, mas um é bebé – que estão numa idade em que não sei se estão interessados por isto, mas acho que qualquer dia vou tentar levá-los a uma escola de golfe para ver o que acontece. A minha esposa nunca se mostrou muito interessada em jogar. Procuro fazer com que ela não seja uma viúva do golfe, mas na família sou o único que joga.
O golfe como indústria?
Eu vejo como algo em que o país pode apostar, porque tem excelentes condições para desenvolver uma oferta turística associada ao golfe. Temos um clima fantástico. Costuma-se dizer que os escoceses jogam até quando faz sol, portanto nós temos essa grande vantagem que é o clima. Durante quase todo o ano podemos praticar a modalidade em condições aprazíveis, em especial no sul, no Algarve. Creio que há que apostar mais numa oferta turística centrada no golfe. Tenho um pouco a impressão, e vou dizer isto com alguma cautela e reserva porque não tenho números, mas julgo que aquilo que nós chamamos de ‘economics’ da exploração de um campo de golfe ainda não está completamente afinado. Dá-me a ideia que há por aí campos que vivem com muitas dificuldades, e portanto tem de haver uma política de promoção do golfe. Atenção que não tem

Is there still some prejudice in relation to golf that may dissuade the youth?
Of course there are other sports that may attract the youth more easily. That require more athletic abilities. With more adrenaline, perhaps. While golf is frequently associated to middle age. But I think it doesn’t have to be this way. In fact, we have a lot of young people in golf, great players and great pros. And on the other hand, unlike many other sports, like football, golf can be played within the family, and has a great life span, which allows it to have a greater critical mass.
Can corporations get returns by betting in golf?
I am convinced of this. The sponsoring of golf, either through tournaments or players, by corporations, regardless of what they are, is important. Especially for the more solid one, that gain through being connected to golf. EuroBIC has done this, just like other banks, and I think that in general terms this is good for the bank’s image and is part of the corporate promotional strategy.
A bet that is to keep?
Yes, at least while I am CEO i will try to maintain it, and I hope the bank has, just like it had had until now, the capacity to maintain a visible presence in supporting the sport.
Going back, to a more personal level. Which was the best course in which you played?
I have in courses that I like a lot, but despite all I hesitate between two I always liked. Estela, which isn’t an easy course, and can be quite demanding. But which is very beautiful right next to the ocean. And I like the Vidago palace, an inland course that I like a lot. But it is also not an easy course.
And what’s your dream course?
St Andrews will always be, for all players, a reference. A sort of Vatican of golf, but if I never have the chance of playing there I won’t be sorry. I would be sorry not to be able to play anymore. And while there is a course in the vicinity... to be able to have the mental hygiene I referred to earlier. That conviviality with the golf community. The nineteenth hole, which is usually bad for our aesthetics, is a convivial place. And the people we meet are a great resource. In our day to day, at work, we usually meet people with the same format we have. A sort of similar mindset, but in golf conversations are much more diverse.
Your best shot...?
It was in Santo da Serra, in a training round. I don’t even remember which hole it was, but I completed a 12 metre putt. Sometimes we manage it... de ser uma política pública. Os clubes, através também dos seus associados, podem ser mais proactivos junto das comunidades locais e das escolas.
Ainda persiste alguns preconceitos em relação ao golfe, o que pode inibir os mais novos.
É evidente que existem outras modalidades que podem atrair com maior facilidade as camadas mais jovens. Exigem uma maior capacidade atlética. Se calhar dão outra adrenalina… quando o golfe é muitas vezes associado à meia-idade. Mas penso que não tem de ser assim. Aliás temos gente muito nova na modalidade, que são belíssimos jogadores e belíssimos profissionais. Pelo contrário, ao contrário de outras modalidades, como o futebol, o golfe pode ser jogado em família e tem uma grande longevidade o que permite ter uma massa crítica maior.
O tecido empresarial ganha apostando no golfe.
Estou convencido que sim. O apoio ao golfe, seja através de torneios ou a jogadores, de empresas, sejam elas quais forem, é importante. Principalmente para as mais sólidas, que ganham através de uma ligação a esta modalidade. O EuroBic tem o feito isso, aliás como outros bancos, e eu acho que em termos de imagem promove a imagem do banco e enquadra-se dentro de uma estratégia promocional da instituição.
Uma aposta para manter?
Sim, eu pelo menos enquanto estiver como CEO procurarei manter e espero que o banco tenha, como tem vindo a ter, capacidade para continuar a ter uma presença visível no apoio a esta modalidade.
Regressando atrás. A um registo mais pessoal. Melhor campo que já jogou?
Eu já joguei em campos que gostei bastante, mas apesar de tudo estou aqui hesitante em dois que apreciei muito jogar. O da Estela, que não é um campo fácil, é até muito exigente. Mas é um campo bonito. Junto ao mar. Gosto do Vidago Palace, um campo de interior que eu gosto muito. Também não é fácil.
O campo de sonho.
St. Andrews será sempre, para qualquer golfista, uma referência. É uma espécie de Vaticano do golfe, mas se nunca tiver oportunidade de lá ir não ficarei com pena. Ficaria sim se não jogasse mais. Enquanto houver um campo por perto… poder ter aquela higiene mental que referi. Aquele convívio com a comunidade golfista. O décimo nono buraco, que normalmente é um atentado à nossa estética, é um local de convívio. As pessoas com quem nos cruzamos no campo enriquecem-nos também. No nosso dia-a-dia, no trabalho, habitualmente lidamos com pessoas que têm a mesma formatação do que nós. Um ‘mindset’ semelhante ao nosso, mas no golfe as conversas são muito diversificadas.
O melhor shot?
Foi no Santo da Serra, numa volta de treino. Já nem me recordo que buraco foi, mas fiz um putt com uns 12 metros. Às vezes acontece…
